Early Roman Calendar (c. 753 BCE — King Romulus)

How it worked: A bizarre 10-month lunar calendar totaling only 304 days! It began in March (Martius) and ended in December. The remaining ~61 winter days were completely uncounted dead time between harvest and spring plowing.
⚠️ The Major Flaw: Missing 61 days caused month names to drift away from seasons almost immediately!

What Was Added
Added January & February at year's end (later moved to start). Year grew from 304 to 355 days.
"Mercedonius" Month
Every other year, priests inserted an extra 27-day leap month called Mercedonius to catch up with the sun.
The Collapse
Corrupt officials skipped or stretched leap months to keep friends in office or avoid taxes! Seasons became 3 months off.

- Locked solar year at 365.25 days.
- Added 1 leap day every 4 years (Feb 29).
- Added 90 fix-it days in 46 BCE ("Year of Confusion") to align seasons.
➖ Removed:
- Banned the corrupt leap month Mercedonius permanently.
- Abandoned moon phases for civil law.
🔬 Hidden Math Glitch:
A solar year is actually 365.2422 days, not 365.25. The Julian year was 11 minutes too long! Over 1,600 years, it drifted 10 full days off schedule.

Gregorian Calendar (1582 CE)

Response to: The Julian calendar's 10-day drift pushed the Spring Equinox back from March 21 to March 11, confusing church holy days (Easter).
➖ Removed 10 Days in 1582:
Pope Gregory XIII ordered Thursday, Oct 4, 1582, to be followed immediately by Friday, Oct 15! 10 drift days vanished overnight.
➕ Added Century Leap Rule:
Century years are ONLY leap years if divisible by 400. (1600 & 2000 were leap years; 1700, 1800, & 1900 were not!). Fixes the 11-minute drift.
🌍 Current Status: Official global standard. Still accurate within 1 day every 3,216 years!
French Republican

1793 — 1805 CE (12 Years)
Response to: French Revolution wanted to eliminate all royal and religious calendar ties.
➖ Removed: 7-day weeks, Sunday rest, Christian saints, Julian month names.
➕ Added: 10-day weeks ("decades"), decimal time (10 hrs/day), weather month names.
Why it died: Workers hated waiting 9 days for 1 rest day! Napoleon restored Gregorian in 1805.

Today: Determines Lunar New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival, and zodiac years.

Biblical Roots • Fixed Math Formula by Hillel II (359 CE)
Response to: Early communities relied on moon sightings in Jerusalem. When scattered worldwide, a permanent math formula synchronized everyone.
➕ Added: Uses a 19-year cycle with 7 leap years where an entire extra 30-day month (Adar I) is added so Passover stays in spring.
Today: Official calendar in Israel alongside Gregorian; sets all Jewish holidays.
🌙 Islamic (Hijri)

Response to: Seasonal drift in older calendars. Khayyam mapped the exact astronomical moment of the Spring Equinox (Nowruz).
Extreme Accuracy: Uses 33-year leap cycles based on direct star observation, making it more accurate than Gregorian!
Status: Drifts only 1 day in 5,000 years! (Gregorian drifts 1 day in 3,216 yrs).

365 days (18 months of 20 days + 5 dangerous nameless days called Wayeb'). Matched farming.
3. The Calendar Round
The Tzolk'in and Haab' meshed like interlocking gears. A specific date combo repeated once every 52 years!
