Introduction
Discuss existing knowledge of Southeast weather (heat, humidity, hurricanes). Introduce the day's goal: becoming regional weather experts.
10 min
Reading Activity
Resource: "Understanding Southeast Weather"
Students read individually or in pairs. Have them circle "Weather Warnings" (hurricanes, storms) and underline "Climate Traits" (humidity, mild winters).
15 min
Collaborative Weather Map Activity
Resource: "Weather Map Collaboration"
Groups of 3-4 use colored pencils to visualize weather patterns. Blue swirls for hurricanes, yellow suns for high heat, gray dots for humidity. Discuss how these impact outdoor plans.
10 min
Worksheet Completion
Resource: "Southeast Weather Patterns"
Individual or pair work. Circulate to check for misconceptions about the difference between daily weather and regional climate.
5 min
Quiz and Closure
Resource: "Southeast Weather Quiz"
Quick check for understanding. Review answers together. Reflect on how weather knowledge keeps people safe during hurricane season.
Quick Prep Tip
The mapping activity works best if you have large maps, but standard 8.5x11 sheets work too. If time is short, assign each group only one state within the Southeast to focus on in detail.
Southeast Weather Reading UNDERSTANDING SOUTHEAST WEATHER
Science & Geography Reading Handout
Welcome to the Sunshine and Storms!
The Southeast region of the United States includes states like Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and the Carolinas. This region is famous for its warm, wet, and often unpredictable weather. Because it is close to the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, the water plays a huge role in the daily climate.
The "Sticky" Factor: Humidity
If you walk outside in a Southeast summer, it might feel like you're walking into a warm, wet blanket! This is called humidity . Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air. Because the Southeast is surrounded by warm ocean waters, the air is often packed with moisture. High humidity makes hot days feel even hotter because your body can't cool down as easily.
Giant Swirls: Hurricanes
From June through November, the Southeast enters Hurricane Season . Hurricanes are massive tropical storms that form over warm ocean waters. They bring incredibly strong winds, heavy rain, and flooding. While they can be dangerous, modern technology allows meteorologists to track them early so people can stay safe.
The Four Seasons in the Southeast
Spring
Warm days and frequent afternoon thunderstorms.
Summer
Very hot and humid with daily rain showers.
Fall
Cooler and drier, but prime hurricane time.
Winter
Generally mild and cool; snow is very rare!
Meteorologist's Dictionary
Climate: The usual weather patterns in a place over a long period.
Precipitation: Any form of water that falls from clouds (rain, snow, hail).
Tropical: Weather that is hot and humid, typical of regions near the equator.
Storm Surge: A rise in sea level caused by a hurricane's strong winds.

Worksheet: Southeast Weather Patterns
1. Three common weather patterns:
Acceptable answers: High humidity, hurricanes, thunderstorms, mild winters, hot/wet summers.
2. How hurricanes affect the region:
Hurricanes bring strong winds, heavy rain, and flooding. They can damage buildings and trees. People must prepare by evacuating or boarding up windows. Environmentally, they can cause coastal erosion and storm surges.
3. Typical climate in summer:
Very hot and humid ("sticky"). Frequent afternoon thunderstorms are common. It feels warmer than the actual temperature because of the high moisture in the air.
Quiz: Southeast Weather Quiz
B) Humidity (2 points)
B) June to November (2 points)
FALSE (Snow is rare in most of the Southeast) (2 points)
A rise in sea level caused by a hurricane's strong winds pushing water toward the shore. (2 points)
They form over warm ocean waters. (2 points)
Mapping Activity - What to look for:
Check that hurricanes are placed near the coasts (FL, GA, NC, SC, LA).
Humidity symbols should be prevalent in the "Deep South" states (AL, MS, LA, GA, FL).
General understanding that southern states are warmer than northern ones in the region.
