Empirical Observation (What is Sensory & Proven)
Verifiable facts perceived directly through sight, touch, and measurement. Free of judgment, guesses, or cultural teleology.
Ex: "Carved bone cylinder, 8.2 cm long, with 4 notched grooves at 1.5 cm intervals."
Archaeological Inference (What is Deduced)
Logical explanations connecting observed evidence with historical context. Inferences remain hypotheses until corroborated by multiple strata.
Ex: "Used as a counting rod or a musical pipe mouthpiece to tally livestock."

Common Traps to Intercept
The "Ritual" Trapdoor: Students label any mysterious shape "religious" to avoid doing rigorous mechanical analysis.
Temporal Teleology: Assuming ancient tools were inferior toys rather than optimized precision technologies.
Sensory Blending: Writing "It smells old" instead of noting oxidized copper or carbon charring.
Tiered Differentiation
Support (Level 1): Sentence stems: "We measured [trait], which indicates [use] because..." Pre-printed material charts.
Standard (Level 2): Multi-attribute logs with requirement to write two mutually exclusive hypotheses.
Extension (Level 3): Calculate labor-hours required to produce the item; evaluate taphonomic decay factors.

Verifiable facts gathered directly through sight, touch, and measurement.

Inference
A logical hypothesis explaining how, why, or by whom the object was used.
"The tool was likely used by grain harvesters to reap spelt or wild barley."
