The Play Lab Challenge
Course: Principles of ECE
+15 Extra Credit Pts

Date: _____________
Target Age: ______________
Mission Objective
Play is the engine of early brain development! Design an original, hands-on, low-cost play activity for young children that stimulates neural connections and targets critical developmental windows.
Part 1: Four Required Design Elements
1 Target Group & Domains
Select Infants (0–12m), Toddlers (1–3y), or Preschoolers (3–5y). Target at least two domains: Physical (gross/fine motor), Cognitive, or Social-Emotional.
2 Brain & Learning Window
Link to a Window of Opportunity (Vision 0–6m, Speech 0–3y, Emotional Control 0–3y, Math/Logic 1–4y, or Motor 0–8y). Explain how synapses or plasticity are activated.
3 Low-Cost Materials & Safety
List 3–5 accessible, low-cost household or recyclable supplies (e.g., fabric scarves, cardboard tubes, sensory bins). Specify 1 deliberate safety protocol.
4 ECE Theorist Justification
Connect to one key theorist: Piaget (sensorimotor exploration), Vygotsky (scaffolding/social play), Erikson (autonomy vs. trust), or Gardner.
Part 2: Deliverable Format (Your 1-Page Blueprint)
Activity Title & Pitch: Punchy name plus a 2-sentence summary of the play concept.
Step-by-Step Play Flow: 3 sequential steps detailing child action and caregiver facilitation.
Developmental Defense: 1 paragraph explaining brain architecture impact (synapse growth, self-regulation, or motor control).
Visual Blueprint: A quick sketch, digital mock-up, or labeled diagram of your play station setup.
Scoring Rubric
15 Total Points
| Category | Exemplary (5 pts) | Proficient (3–4 pts) | Score |
|---|
| Developmental Windows | Clear link to 2+ domains & specific window | Identifies 1 domain; general link to window | ___/5 |
| Creativity & Play Setup | Low-cost, engaging, clear steps & safety | Workable activity; standard setup/materials | ___/5 |
| Theory & Brain Defense | Accurate theory tie-in & brain impact explanation | Basic theorist mention with limited depth | ___/5 |
