National Hispanic Heritage Month is a time for people in the United States to celebrate Hispanic culture. They honor the history of Latino and Hispanic people. People with Hispanic heritage may come from Spain or Mexico. They can also come from other countries in the Caribbean and Central and South America. This month is celebrated in other places too. Canada and Latin America also celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th to October 15th each year. President Lyndon B. Johnson started this celebration. In 1968, he called for one week of celebration. He did this to honor the Hispanic culture. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan extended the week-long celebration. He called for the celebration to last a whole month. The timing of this special month is important. In September, many Latin American countries celebrate their independence. For example, Mexico celebrates its independence day on September 16th. Chile celebrates its independence on September 18th.
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated in many different ways. Some visit small businesses owned by Hispanic people. This may include eating at Hispanic restaurants. Parades are organized. Concerts are performed. People enjoy listening to Hispanic music. Many also enjoy Hispanic food, including Mexican food. Many individuals with Hispanic heritage are remembered during this month. For example, Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta are often studied by students. Also, artwork created by Hispanic artists is enjoyed by many. For example, people visit museums where artwork by Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo is on display.
