Farmers Rise Up
The Birth of the Populist Movement
The Problem
Too Much Supply
Farmers grew more crops than people wanted to buy. Supply grew faster than demand!
Falling Prices
With so much food available, prices dropped. Farmers made much less money for their hard work.
Income: DOWN
Expenses: HIGH
Pointing Fingers
Farmers felt squeezed by three main groups:
Railroads
Charged very high prices to ship crops to market.
Banks
Charged high interest on survival loans.
Suppliers
Overcharged for essential tools and seeds.
The Grange & Alliances
The National Grange
Friendship and education.
Created Cooperatives .
Farmers' Alliances
Huge networks in the South and West that pushed for storage laws.
Vocabulary
Cooperative
A store where farmers bought from each other to keep prices low.
Populism
An appeal to the "common people" against wealthy elites.
The People's Party
Free Silver: Making unlimited silver coins to help farmers pay off their debts.
Shorter Hours: Fighting for 8-hour days for workers in the cities.
Govt. Tracks: Government ownership of railroads to keep shipping fair.
Income Tax: Higher tax rates for the wealthiest people.
"The railroads took possession of the land... and the bankers took possession of the farmer."
— Senator William A. Peffer
Populist Legacy
Election of 1896
Populists backed William Jennings Bryan , but William McKinley won the presidency.
Did They Fail?
No! Most of their ideas were adopted later in the 1900s.
Winning Ideas:
8-Hour Workday
Direct Election of Senators
National Income Tax
End of Gold Standard
Harvest Hardships
Next Step: Farm Simulation
We will now step into the boots of 19th-century farmers. You will manage a ledger, track your income, and face the same economic pressures as the Populists.

Grade 5 Social Studies
Activity Overview
Students roleplay as 19th-century farmers managing a "Farm Ledger" through three economic rounds. Required Materials: 1 Farm Ledger Worksheet per student, 15 tokens per student, and the Scenario Cards for the teacher.
Learning Objectives
Explain why crop prices fell (over-supply).
Experience the financial pressure of railroads and banks.
Identify benefits of farmer cooperatives.
Setup Tips
Use paper scraps or coins as tokens.
Encourage students to verbalize frustration during Round 2.
Procedure
1
Intro: "Welcome to 1870. You've worked for years to build this farm. Here is $15 of your savings. Can you survive the market?"
2
Round 1: The Good Harvest
Read Scenario Card 1 aloud. Students collect $10 income and pay $8 expenses.
3
Round 2: The Economic Downturn
Read Scenario Card 2. Oversupply crashes prices! Students earn only $4 but pay $10.
4
Round 3: Joining the Grange
Read Scenario Card 3. Farmers unite! Laws cap rates. Students earn $5 and pay $4.
Debrief Questions
Why did you lose money in Round 2?
Supply grew too fast, making crop prices drop below the cost of shipping.
How did the "Co-op" help in Round 3?
Collective buying and legal limits on railroads reduced the cost of doing business.
Extension Activities
Campaign Posters
Have students create a "People's Party" campaign poster based on one of the platform goals (Free Silver, 8-Hour Workday, or Direct Election of Senators). They must explain how this goal would help a farmer like the one they played in the simulation.
The "Free Silver" Debate
Hold a mini-debate where students roleplay as a Farmer (pro-silver) and a Banker (pro-gold). How does each group view the value of money? Why does the farmer want *more* coins in circulation?

Farmer's Reflection
1. In Round 2, you grew a successful crop, but you likely lost money. Why did this happen?
2. How did joining the Grange change your expenses in Round 3?
3. Why did farmers feel they needed a political party to help them?
