Phase 1: Perspective Hook & Mystery (7 Minutes)
Slides 1–2
Teacher Action: Stand facing the class with your phone or iPad compass app open. Walk a few steps and say, "Scholars, I am looking for the classroom door. Which way should I go?"
Student Expectation: Students will point and shout "Go right!" or "That way!"
Scripted Teaching Move: Turn to your right (which will be their left) and say: "Wait a minute! My right is different from your right because we are facing each other! If explorers used 'left' and 'right,' we would all get lost! That’s why mapmakers invented a secret set of magic directions that NEVER change."
Phase 2: Direct Instruction & Video Viewing (13 Minutes)
Slides 3–5
1. Tool vs. Symbol (Slide 3): Contrast a physical handheld compass (a magnetic tool where the needle always points North) with a Compass Rose (a drawing on a map that shows directions).
2. The Mnemonic Trick (Slide 4): Introduce the 4 directions starting at the top and going clockwise:
N = Never (Up)
E = Eat (Right)
S = Soggy (Down)
= Waffles (Left)
