Community Quilt Lesson Plan
Grades K–3 • 60 Minutes
Core Focus
Classroom roles, individual strengths, and kindness pledges in a shared community.
Final Product
A large, collaborative wall quilt constructed from interlocking student tiles.
SEL Competencies
Self-Awareness (identity) & Relationship Skills (belonging, kindness).
Essential Questions
What makes each member of our classroom family unique and important?
How do our individual actions and kindness build a stronger community?
In what ways is a classroom like a warm patchwork quilt?
Learning Goals
Identify: Name at least one personal strength or helpful role they bring to class.
Commit: Formulate one actionable kindness pledge to care for peers.
Create: Illustrate and assemble a personalized quilt tile.
Materials & Advance Preparation
Teacher Materials:
Patchwork Pals Slide Deck
A real quilt, knitted blanket, or fabric scrap (for hook)
Butcher paper (approx. 4ft x 5ft) or bulletin board space
Tape, glue stick, or hole puncher & yarn for stitching
Per Student Materials:
1-2 Printed Quilt Tile Templates (cardstock ideal)
Crayons, colored pencils, or washable markers
Child safety scissors
Optional: Patterned paper scraps or fabric stickers
Instructional Flow: Part 1
10 MIN Warm-Up
Hook: The Tale of the Single Thread & Quilt
Show students a single scrap of fabric or strand of yarn. Ask: "Can this single piece keep an entire room warm?" Now show a finished quilt. Explain that a quilt is made of distinct patches that keep people warm only when joined together. Project Slide 2-3 to introduce our classroom family concept.
15 MIN Guided Talk
Direct Exploration: My Role & My Kindness Pledge
Define a community as a group of people who live, learn, or work together and care for one another. Discuss two vital questions: "What makes me special?" (talents, cheerfulness, neatness) and "What is my kindness pledge?" (listening, inviting peers to play, cleaning up). Model drawing and writing a sample tile under a document camera.

Studio Work, Assembly & Debrief
Hands-On Workshop
20 MIN Studio Time
Hands-On Studio: Crafting the Personal Quilt Tile
Distribute the Kindness Tile Activity sheets. Guide students through the four corners of their tile:
1. Center: Self-portrait or personal emblem 2. Top Banner: "I bring..." (strength/role) 3. Bottom Banner: "I pledge to..." (action) 4. Outer Border: Color repeating geometric stitch
15 MIN Assembly
Quilt Stitching Ceremony & Circle Reflection
Call students in small groups to the community bulletin board. Students cut their square tile and affix it side-by-side with classmates, creating interlocking patterns. Conclude in a circle using the Circle Talk Discussion Cards . Recite our Classroom Quilt Pledge together.
Differentiation & Scaffolding Strategies
Emerging Writers (K-1)
Provide pre-printed icon stickers (helping hands, smiling heart, listening ears) and offer dictation scribing for written pledges.
Multilingual Learners
Encourage writing family greetings or kindness words in home languages on the decorative border pattern.
Advanced / Extension
Students interview a school worker (custodian, librarian, nurse) and craft a special "Honorary Community Tile" for them.
Observational Assessment Rubric
Observable Skill Meets / Exceeds Approaching / Support Civic Awareness Clearly articulates how their personal role helps the classroom function safely and joyfully. Needs teacher prompting to connect personal action with whole-group wellbeing. Kindness Commitment Pledges a concrete, actionable social behavior (e.g., "I will share recess jump ropes"). Offers vague pledge (e.g., "Be good"); benefits from specific scenario choices. Collaborative Spirit Respects peers' artwork during assembly; celebrates the collective beauty of the quilt. Focuses solely on own tile; needs support appreciating others' contributions.

Wonder & Discover Part 1
What is the Secret of a Quilt?
One Single Scrap
A single piece of cloth is small. It cannot keep the whole room warm all on its own!
Small • Fragile • Alone
Stitched Together
When many unique patches are stitched together, they create a warm, cozy, unbreakable blanket!
Warm • Strong • Beautiful
Our classroom is just like a quilt: each of us is a vital patch!
Civic Idea Part 2
What Makes a Community?
Living & Learning
A group of people sharing the same space, routines, and goals.
Caring For Peers
Looking out for one another when someone feels sad, stuck, or left out.
Working Together
Pitching in to make our room a happy, tidy, and safe place to grow.
Turn & Talk: What is one thing you love about our classroom family?
Self-Awareness Part 3
Every Patch Has a Special Spark!
No two patches on a quilt are ever identical. What unique gift do you bring to our room?
😄
Cheerfulness
Bringing big smiles and good laughs
👂
Good Listener
Patiently hearing what peers say
🤝
Helpful Hands
Cleaning up and holding doors
🎨
Creative Mind
Sharing wild ideas and colorful art
“My classroom is brighter because I bring my unique spark!”
Relationship Skills Part 4
What is a Kindness Pledge?
A pledge is a promise made from the heart. What will you promise to do for your classmates?
At Recess
“I promise to invite someone new to play when they are standing by themselves.”
During Group Work
“I promise to speak gently and cheer my teammates on when work feels tough.”
At Clean-Up Time
“I promise to pick up items even if I wasn't the one who dropped them.”
Kindness is the invisible thread that holds our quilt together.
