Day 1: Island Cartography, Bird's-Eye View & Map Legends
Total Duration: 2 Days (40 min/day)
Focus: Geography, Symbols, Spatial Thinking
Learning Targets (Day 1)
Define a map as a flat drawing of a place from above (bird's-eye view).
Recognize that symbols represent real landmarks.
Construct a map key (legend) with matching symbols.
Essential Questions
“How does a map help an explorer navigate an unfamiliar place? Why do we use symbols instead of giant realistic pictures?”
Day 1 Materials & Advance Prep
• 1 copy of Treasure Island Map per student
• 1 sheet of Landmark Cut-Out Tokens per pair or student
• Student tools: safety scissors, glue sticks, crayons
Day 1 Pacing & Guided Instructional Routine (40 Minutes)
Hook & The Flying Parrot (10 mins) Whole Group
Say: “Imagine you are Captain Polly the Parrot flying high above an ocean island! What does a palm tree look like from the clouds? Just a green star or circle! That is a bird's-eye view .” Project the Island Builder Slides . Show how a flat shape becomes an island and how small symbols keep maps easy to read.
Guided Island Architecture (15 mins) Direct Scaffolding
Model how to write a pirate name (“Captain Leo's Skull Island”). Demonstrate choosing 4 landmark tokens (e.g., Volcano, Palm Forest, Crocodile Swamp, Shipwreck Cove). Crucial Tip: Remind students to place landmarks spread out across the island before gluing so they have open space for tomorrow's treasure path!
Building the Map Key / Legend (10 mins) Independent Practice
Direct students to the “Map Key” box in the bottom corner of their map sheet. Students match each placed landmark by drawing or pasting the identical symbol next to the printed word label. Circulate to ensure symbols in the key match those on the island canvas.
Map Inspection Debrief (5 mins) Partner Share
Students hold up their maps for a quick “Cartographer Gallery Wave.” Partner swap: “Point to your partner's dangerous landmark! Can you find it in their Map Key?” Store maps safely in project folders for Day 2.
First-Grade Cartography Trap: Students often cluster all 4 landmarks into one corner or draw them huge. Model on the whiteboard how spreading landmarks into North, South, East, and West corners makes room for fun trails tomorrow!

Day 2: Compass Directions, Trail Plotting & The Partner Treasure Hunt
Day 2 of 2
Focus: Cardinal Directions, Writing Clues, Review
Learning Targets (Day 2)
Identify North, South, East, and West on a Compass Rose.
Plot a sequential route using dashed trail lines to a designated Red X.
Communicate navigation steps using directional words.
Memory Trick
“N ever E at S oggy W affles” (Clockwise starting at the top: North, East, South, West).
Day 2 Materials Checklist
• Students' Day 1 Map Craft Sheets
• 1 copy of Captain Clues Activity per student
• Red crayons or markers for the secret “X” mark
Day 2 Pacing & Guided Instructional Routine (40 Minutes)
Kinesthetic Compass Warmup (10 mins) Movement Game
Have all students stand up. Point to the front board as NORTH, the back wall as SOUTH, windows as EAST, door as WEST. Play a rapid game of “Captain Says:” “Captain says take two hops NORTH! Captain says turn and face WEST!” Then students fill out their map's Compass Rose box (N, S, E, W).
Drawing Trails & Hiding the Red X (15 mins) Direct Scaffolding
Model starting at the Pirate Shipwreck on the coast. Use a pencil to draw a dashed trail: “First we go North past the volcano, then East past the swamp! Now stamp a big bold RED X!” Students copy this technique on their own maps, navigating past at least two landmarks to place their treasure.
Writing Clue Cards & Partner Exchange (10 mins) Collaborative Work
Hand out the Captain Clues Activity . Students fill in 3 sentence frames with directional arrows and landmark names (e.g., “Walk EAST to the cave”). Then, pair students up. Matey 1 reads their clues aloud; Matey 2 follows the path on the map with their finger to see if they land on the X!
Self-Check & Cartographer Badges (5 mins) Closure & Evaluation
Distribute or display the Cartographer Badge Checklist . Students review their own map for all 5 core elements (Name, Compass Rose, Landmarks, Key, Trail with X). Teacher stamps each completed map with the “Master Cartographer” seal!
Differentiation & Scaffolding
For Emerging Writers / ELL: Provide pre-printed arrow stickers (⬆️ ⬇️ ⬅️ ➡️) on the clue worksheet so students can match arrows directly without heavy writing.
For Early Finishers / Enrichment: Challenge students to add a second “Booby Trap” or obstacle on their map and write a warning clue (“Beware of the swamp crocodiles!”).
