Emergency vs. Everyday Problem
Critical Decision
REAL EMERGENCY: Call 911
When someone is badly hurt, in danger, or there is fire or crime happening right now:
✓ Flames or heavy smoke in a house or yard
✓ A person passes out or cannot breathe
✓ A serious car crash on the street
NOT An Emergency: Tell an Adult
Problems that parents, teachers, or friends can solve without police or fire trucks:
✗ A scraped knee or small paper cut
✗ Losing a favorite toy, tablet, or jacket
✗ An argument over sharing during recess
Remember: Never call 911 as a joke or prank. It keeps helpers away from people who need help!
📞
The 3 Golden Rules of Calling 911
Step-by-Step
1
Know Your Location
The dispatcher's very first question is: "Where is your emergency?" Memorize your home address and street name!
2
State What Happened
Take a deep breath. Speak slowly and clearly. Say if someone is hurt, if there is a fire, or if you feel unsafe.
3
Stay on the Phone!
Never hang up until the dispatcher tells you it is safe to do so. Help is already on the way while you talk!
Practice with your family: "My name is _____ and I live at _____."
🔥
