The Fragmented Hook (10 min)
Project a high-contrast image of the "Gestalt Dalmatian." Do not tell students what it is. Ask them to shout out what they see.
Teacher Script:
"Look at these blobs. Your brain is desperately trying to make sense of them. If you see just spots, you're a Structuralist. If you see a dog, you're a Gestaltist. Why?"

Context & Theory (20 min)
Use the Perception Lab Slides to explain the transition from Wundt's Structuralism to the Gestalt movement (Wertheimer, Köhler, Koffka). Emphasize that Gestalt isn't just "seeing shapes"—it was a rebellion against the idea that the mind is a machine built of tiny parts.
Define Emergence: The whole appears all at once.
Define Reification: The brain adds info that isn't there.

Fragmented Reality Lab (30 min)
Distribute the Fragmented Reality Worksheet . Students work individually or in pairs to analyze their own "snap" of recognition.
Common Misconception
Students often think "Gestalt" means "optical illusion." Clarify that these illusions are just the evidence of how the healthy brain works every day.

For advanced learners, ask: "If perception is holistic, how do we ever notice small errors or typos in a large text?"

Q: Why is Structuralism insufficient?
Answer: Structuralism fails to explain why we see objects as units. If we only saw "parts," we would be overwhelmed by data. We see a "face," not two eyes, a nose, and a mouth separately.

Answer: This is the moment of "Global Superiority" where the global shape (the whole) is processed before the individual components.

Processing the 90% of a shape we see is enough to identify the 100%.

How We Track the Hidden
In the natural world, objects are rarely seen in their entirety. A tiger is partially obscured by tall grass; a bird is hidden by branches. The Gestalt principles of Continuity and Closure are not just "design tricks"—they are evolutionary adaptations for survival.
Continuity in Action
Allows a predator to predict the path of prey even when they disappear briefly behind an obstacle.
Closure in Action
Allows us to identify a "snake" even if we only see three separate sections of its body between rocks.
Breaking the Rules: Camouflage
Camouflage is the art of anti-Gestalt. It works by:
Disruptive Coloration: High-contrast patterns that "break up" the continuous outlines of the body, making it impossible for the brain to achieve Closure .
Mimicry: Using Similarity to blend into the background patterns (e.g., a leaf insect).

The "Dazzle" Effect
WWI ships used "Dazzle Camouflage"—chaotic stripes that didn't hide the ship, but used Anti-Continuity to make it impossible to tell which way the ship was heading.

The background or environment. It is perceived as formless and continuous behind the figure.
