While millions of creatures have lived on Earth, fossilization is extremely rare. Most organisms decompose before they can turn into stone. For a fossil to form, an organism usually needs hard parts like bones and must be buried quickly by sediment. This is why soft-bodied jellyfish almost never fossilize.
