Before modern navigation, early cartographers relied on a global coordinate system to navigate open oceans. This system divides Earth into a massive grid of imaginary lines. A globe is a three-dimensional, spherical model of the Earth. It is the only representation of our planet that does not distort shape, size, distance, or direction. Flat maps inevitably stretch or shrink certain regions (this is called distortion ) because it is mathematically impossible to flatten a round sphere perfectly onto flat paper. Globes are used by cartographers, ocean navigators, and scientists to analyze true global shapes and relative distances, especially across the poles.
