Field Observations & Essential Terms
Welcome, Scientist! Use this field guide to master the vocabulary of our planet. These terms describe how living things interact with each other and their environment.
Ecosystem
All the living organisms in a specific area interacting with their non-living environment (like water, air, and soil) as a system.
Biome
A large geographic region defined by its climate (temperature and rainfall) and the specific types of plants and animals that live there. Examples: Rainforest, Tundra, Desert, Grassland.
Biotic Factors
The living parts of an ecosystem, including animals, plants, fungi, and bacteria.
Abiotic Factors
The non-living parts of an ecosystem that affect living things, such as sunlight, temperature, water, soil, and wind.
Community
All the different populations of different species that live and interact in the same area at the same time.
Population
A group of individuals of the same species living in the same geographic area.
Habitat
The specific physical place where an organism lives that provides it with food, water, shelter, and space to survive.
Niche
The unique "job" or role an organism plays within its ecosystem, including what it eats and how it survives.
Biodiversity
The variety of different species of plants and animals found in a specific ecosystem or on Earth as a whole.
