The Mission Brief
Earth’s Deep Space Exploration Fleet is launching crewed expeditions across the Solar System. Your mission is to create an authoritative Planetary Survival Guide for crew members landing on your assigned planet. You must equip astronauts with verified astronomical intelligence, warn them of deadly planetary hazards, and prescribe engineered survival protocols.
Mandatory Planetary Intel (Research Checklist)
All 6 core fields required
1. Size & Gravity
Diameter (km), comparison to Earth (ratio), and surface gravity vs Earth (1g).
2. Solar Distance
Order from Sun, distance in km and AU, and solar energy availability.
3. Surface & Climate
Temp range (°C or °F), atmosphere gases, and extreme weather/pressure hazards.
4. Orbital Dynamics
Length of 1 day (rotation) and length of 1 year (revolution in Earth time).
5. Moons & Rings
Total moon count, key major moons, rings present, and possible satellite outposts.
6. 5 Survival Facts
Five unique scientific phenomena or surface features vital for crew survival.
Choose Your Production Medium (Select One)
Option A: Paper Survival Tri-Fold Hands-On
- ✓ Fold standard 8.5×11 sheet into a 3-panel (6-sided) brochure.
- ✓ Hand-drawn or printed full-color diagrams, schematics & maps.
- ✓ All sections neatly hand-lettered in clear, complete sentences.
Option B: Digital Mission Deck Digital
- ✓ 4-6 slide presentation deck (Google Slides, Canva, or PowerPoint).
- ✓ High-resolution NASA/ESA images, labeled callout graphics.
- ✓ Consistent aerospace theme, bulleted details & full captions.
Expedition Execution Steps
Phase 1: Intel
Research verified NASA statistics and complete Page 2 organizer.
Phase 2: Hazards
Identify top 3 fatal conditions (radiation, heat/ice, pressure, gas).
Phase 3: Solutions
Design realistic gear: spacesuit specs, power source, shelter base.
Phase 4: Launch
Assemble brochure or slides; review rubric before final turn-in.

Mission Evaluation Rubric
Total Possible: 20 Points
| Criteria | Mission Commander (5 pts) | Astronaut (3-4 pts) | Cadet (1-2 pts) |
|---|
| 1. Astronomical Intel | All 6 core stats accurate, specific units included, comprehensive profile. | 4-5 stats accurate; minor data or unit omission. | Fewer than 4 stats complete; inaccurate or vague data. |
| 2. Hazards & Survival | Realistic hazards thoroughly analyzed with logical sci-fi / engineering gear. | Hazards noted with basic equipment recommendations. | Superficial hazard warnings; missing survival gear solutions. |
| 3. Visual Presentation | Exceptional layout (brochure or slides), color-coded, labeled diagrams. | Organized structure with color and images; minor clutter. | Unfinished folds/slides, lacks color or visuals, messy format. |
| 4. Writing & Polish | Polished technical tone, 100% complete sentences, error-free mechanics. | Clear sentences with minimal grammar/spelling errors. | Fragments, bullet dumps without complete thoughts, frequent errors. |
