Linguistic Heritage
IT IS A FACT!
Derived from Hokkien "Kê-tsiap" (鮭汁)
Centuries ago, Chinese merchants in Fujian created a fermented fish sauce called kê-tsiap. They brought it along maritime trade routes right into the thriving port of Malacca.
1600s: British sailors in Malacca fell in love with the sauce
They took the bottles and phonetically wrote it as "catchup" / "ketchup"
Where Did Tomatoes Come From?
The original Malaysian/Chinese version had zero tomatoes! Over a century later, American chefs experimented by adding tomatoes and sugar, creating the modern fry dip we know today.

The Straits of Malacca was a historic global crossroads. Words and foods we use daily were shaped by Southeast Asian maritime trade!
