Story: Maya's Plant Experiment
Read the science test below
Maya is a 6th grade scientist. She asks a question: "Which liquid makes tomato plants grow taller?"
Plant A Gets: Water 💧
Plant B Gets: Milk 🥛
Plant C Gets: Orange Juice 🍊
Independent Variable: Maya changes the type of liquid (water, milk, or juice).
Dependent Variable: Maya measures the plant height in centimeters (cm) with a ruler.
Controlled Variables: Maya keeps the same soil , the same pots , the same sunlight (6 hours), and the same amount of liquid (50 mL).
Science Rule: What is a Fair Test?
A test is fair when you change only ONE independent variable. If you change two things, you will not know why the plant grew!

Total Physical Response (TPR) Gestures
Independent: Pretend to turn a knob or flick a switch: "I change it!"
Dependent: Pretend to hold a ruler or tap a stopwatch: "I measure it!"
Controlled: Hold both hands flat and parallel: "Keep it equal and fair!"
Oral Practice Sentence Frames
"In this test, the scientist changed the ______."
"The scientist will measure ______ to get data."
"To make it fair, they must keep the ______ same."
Common ELL Misconceptions: Students often associate independent with "working alone in class" rather than "the factor the scientist chooses to change." Emphasize the mnemonic: "I"ndependent = "I" change it!
