Learning Objective
Students will understand and demonstrate how soap molecules act as a bridge between oil and water using their hydrophilic (water-loving) and hydrophobic (oil-loving) ends.

• Jar of water + cooking oil

• Role Tags (Water, Oil, Soap)
• Open space for movement
• Soap Scout Exit Ticket
Lesson Procedure

Warm-up
The Oil & Water Mystery
Present the jar of oil and water. Point out the layers. Ask: "Why don't they mix?" Shake the jar and let it settle while students observe. Introduce the problem: Oil and water are not friends.

Inquiry
How Soap Works (Video)
Play the SciShow Kids segment (start at 11:00). Pause at 13:36 when the soap molecule animation appears. Highlight the two ends: one that loves water and one that loves oil.
Teacher Tip: Use the terms "Water-Lover" and "Oil-Lover" first, then introduce the scientific terms "Hydrophilic" and "Hydrophobic".

Molecular Tag
Move to an open space. Assign roles using armbands or tags:
Water (50%): Must hold hands in a cluster. They represent the tight "skin" of water particles.
Oil (25%): Float around individually. They cannot touch the water cluster.
Soap (25%): The only ones who can "bridge" the gap.
The Rules: Soap students must grab an Oil student's hand and then use their other hand to grab the Water group. Once linked, the Oil student is "washed away" into the water group.

Ask: "Could the water wash the oil away without the soap? Why not?" Distribute exit tickets for students to draw and label their own soap molecule.
