Section A: Rocks, Minerals & Soil
Term 1
Mineral
A natural, nonliving solid substance that has a definite chemical structure and crystalline pattern.
Example: Quartz, Gold, Diamond
Term 2
Rock
A solid natural material made of one or more minerals.
Example: Granite, Limestone
Term 3
Humus
The dark organic material in soil formed from decayed plants and animals. Rich in nutrients for plants!
Crucial for fertile farming soil.
Term 4
Resource
Any material found in nature that people use to survive, build, and power their lives.
Can be renewable or nonrenewable.
Section B: Rocks Types & Protection
Term 5
Igneous Rock
Rock formed when melted rock (magma beneath or lava on the surface) cools down and hardens.
Key Clue: "Born of fire" (volcanoes).
Term 6
Sedimentary Rock
Rock formed from tiny pieces of worn-down rock, shells, or sand pressed together in layers over time.
Contains fossils very often.
Term 7
Metamorphic Rock
Rock that has been completely changed from its original form by intense heat and crushing pressure deep underground.
Example: Limestone becomes Marble.
Term 8
Conservation
The wise use, management, and protection of Earth's natural resources so they do not run out or become ruined.
Example: Recycling, planting trees.

Day 1

Addressing Misconceptions
- Rocks vs. Minerals: Students often use these interchangeably. Clarify that minerals are pure ingredients (like cake flour/sugar), whereas rocks are baked combinations of minerals (the final cake).
- Metamorphic Rock Melting: Emphasize that metamorphic rocks are changed by intense heat and pressure but do not completely melt. If they melt fully, they turn into magma and eventually cool back into igneous rock.
- Humus: Remind students that humus is strictly organic (living/once-living matter) and is NOT the same as "dirt" or geological sand.
Classroom Extension Activities
1. Interactive Rock Cycle: Use Starburst candies (compressed together for sedimentary, warmed and pressed for metamorphic, fully microwaved/melted for igneous) to physically model rock transitions.
2. Schoolyard Mineral Detective: Hand students magnifying glasses and go outside to inspect bricks, sidewalks, and natural gravel. Challenge them to find crystals (quartz grains) or organic soil matter.
