Define Site factors (physical characteristics) and Situation factors (connections/surroundings).
Analyze a fictional topographic map to identify geographic advantages and disadvantages.
Apply concepts to select a settlement location and defend the choice using evidence.
Prep Checklist
Print Terrain Territory Maps (1 per group of 3-4)
Print Site Defense Worksheets (1 per student)
Print and cut Settlement Flag Sheets
Cue video to 0:00 (Pause at 3:57 and 4:33)
Instructional Sequence
5 MIN
Warm-up: The Water Connection
Project the "Famous Cities" slide. Ask: "What physical feature do New York, Cairo, and London all share?"
Answer: Proximity to major water sources (Harbor, Nile River, Thames River). Explain that this is a classic "Site" factor.
10 MIN
Video Viewing & Interactive Check
Watch the "Urbanization" video. Pause at 3:57 (Scenario A, B, C).
Interactive Segment: Have students vote on the best location before resuming. Resume to 4:33 to see the reveal (Location B is best).
Discussion Key: Location B wins because of Site (river access, flat land) and Situation (near port/roads).
25 MIN
Main Activity: Settlement Scout
Distribute maps and flags. Groups must select one location on the map to place their flag.
Site Defense
Students must identify 2 physical traits (e.g., "The delta has fertile soil" or "The mountains provide defense").
Situation Defense
Students must identify 1 connection (e.g., "It is located at the crossroads of the mountain pass and the coast").
10 MIN
Closure: The Great Debate
Groups share their location. Discuss: "Why was the River Delta the most popular choice? Why did nobody choose the Salt Desert?"
Key Vocabulary
Term Definition Site Factors The physical characteristics of a location (climate, soil, water). Situation Factors Relative location and connections (trade routes, nearby cities). Urbanization The growth of cities and urban areas.
