1 The Three States of Matter
SOLID
Has a fixed shape and a fixed volume.
Particles:
Packed tightly together. They vibrate in place.
LIQUID
Has a fixed volume but changes shape to fit the container.
Particles:
Close together but can flow and slide past each other.
GAS
Changes shape and changes volume to fill the whole space.
Particles:
Far apart and move very quickly in all directions.
2 Physical Properties
A physical property is a characteristic you can observe or measure without changing what the material is.
Observation Properties
- Color, Shape, and Size
- Texture (smooth or rough)
- State (solid, liquid, or gas)
Measurable Properties
- Mass: How much matter is in an object.
- Volume: How much space it takes up.
- Temperature: Boiling and melting points.
Magnetism & Density
Magnetism: Some metals like iron are attracted to magnets.
Density: Determines if an object sinks or floats.
Solubility
The ability of a substance to dissolve (spread evenly) into a liquid, like salt in water.

- ☀️ Evaporation: Boil water to get salt.
