🥛 THE SPILLED MILK MYSTERY • EL MISTERIO DE LA LECHE DERRAMADA
Thinking Like a Scientist Pensando como un Científico
Someone spilled the milk! Today, you are a science detective. We will learn how to look at raw clues before pointing fingers.

CORE RULE / REGLA PRINCIPAL
Observation
Observación
What you can actually see or hear directly. It is 100% true data with no guessing.
ENG: "Puddle of white liquid on the kitchen table."
Inference
Inferencia
A logical guess or explanation for what happened. It might be true, or it might be wrong!
ENG: "The cat knocked over the glass of milk."

Why does it matter?
¿Por qué importa?
Scientists must report ONLY observation data first. Making unproven inferences leads to bad science.
Bias & Assumptions
Sesgos y Prejuicios
Our brains are hardwired to build stories (inferences). Great scientists constantly question their stories.
Nuestros cerebros crean historias e inferencias automáticamente. Los buenos científicos cuestionan sus historias.
What's Next?

Use your Inquiry Eye in all labs this semester! Always separate "What I see" from "What I think".

1
Warm-Up: Fact vs. Guess
Read the two statements about our kitchen crime scene. Check whether each is a pure Observation (Obs) or a logical Inference (Inf) .
"There is white liquid on the kitchen table."
Obs Inf
"The cat spilled the milk and ran away."
Obs Inf
2
The Kitchen Evidence Board
Analyze the kitchen crime scene slide. Record exactly what you observe (visual data) vs. what you can infer (possible culprits or actions).
PURE OBSERVATIONS (VISUAL DATA)
LOGICAL INFERENCES (EXPLANATIONS)
3
The Suspect Investigation
Many people assume the cat spilled the milk. Write down one alternative explanation (inference) that does not involve the cat.
Alternative Inference (Who or what else could have done it?):
4
Scientific Reflection
Why must scientists carefully separate their direct observations from their inferences? Explain how mistaking an inference for a fact might ruin a scientific experiment.

MASTER COPY
1
Section 1 Key: Fact vs. Guess
Statement A: "White liquid on table..."
✔ OBSERVATION
Directly visible without any assumptions.
Statement B: "Cat spilled the milk..."
✔ INFERENCE
No one saw the spill occur; it is a guess.
2
Section 2 Key: Kitchen Evidence Board
This scenario immediately gets students pointing fingers. Help them realize that a peaceful sleeping cat might be innocent!
Correct Observations (Data):
An overturned cup on the table.
A puddle of white liquid on the table surface.
The window is open and curtains are blowing.
A muddy footprint is on the windowsill.
A cat is sleeping on the floor rug.
Correct Inferences (Guesses):
The sleeping cat knocked over the cup.
A stray dog or raccoon jumped through the open window and spilled it.
The wind blew the cup over.
A person spilled it, opened the window, and escaped.
Facilitation Tip: Ask students: "Is the cat wet? Is there mud on the cat's paws?" Since the slide states the rug is completely dry, a smart detective might infer the footprint on the window is older, or belonged to a different animal!
3
Section 3 Key: Alternative Culprit
Acceptable Alternative Inferences:
Wind: A strong gust of wind blew through the open window and knocked over the empty cup.
Intruder: Another wild animal (like a squirrel or raccoon) entered, walked on the muddy sill, spilled the milk, and left.
Human Error: A clumsy family member spilled the milk and blamed it on the sleeping pet.
4
Section 4 Key: Scientific Reflection Expectations
Ideal Student Response: If scientists don't separate observations from inferences, they will build theories on guesses instead of facts. They might falsely accuse a variable (like blaming the cat) and never discover the true cause of a phenomenon (like the wind or weather).
✔ Full Credit: Expresses that assumptions bias outcomes and result in bad experiments.
❌ No Credit: Simple restatements of definitions without explaining the scientific risk.
