Part 1 • Informational Reading: An Oasis of Civilization
Thousands of years ago, most of Southwest Asia was a punishing desert of sun-baked dunes and rocky plateaus. Yet curving through this arid landscape lay a miraculous green corridor shaped like a quarter-moon: the Fertile Crescent. Stretching from the warm waters of the Persian Gulf northwest through the valleys of modern Iraq and Syria, it curved southwest along the Mediterranean coast toward the Nile Valley.
At the very heart of this corridor lay Mesopotamia, a Greek term meaning "the land between the rivers." These two lifelines were the Tigris and the Euphrates. Both began high in the snow-draped mountains of modern Turkey and flowed southeast for over a thousand miles before emptying into the Persian Gulf.
Each spring, melting mountain snow triggered violent, sudden floods along both rivers. While terrifying to early settlers, these floods deposited a thick layer of dark, mineral-rich mud called silt. This natural fertilizer turned the barren desert floor into some of the most productive farmland on Earth, capable of growing bountiful fields of barley, wheat, dates, and onions.
To survive without regular rain, early communities engineered vast irrigation systems. By digging canals and raising earthen walls called levees, farmers channeled water straight to their crops. The resulting food surplus freed artisans, builders, and scribes to invent cities, writing, and early law.
