WIDA Level 1 Assessment Guide
Collision Initial Model: Exemplar & Scoring Key
Target Science Ideas & Multilingual Evaluation
Core Conceptual Target: In any collision, when two objects touch, forces act between them at the contact point. At Time 2 (split-second later), the objects change shape (deform, compress, bend, or crack). Even rigid objects bend slightly during impacts!
Time 1: First Touch (Primer Contacto) Exemplar
Student Visual Work Exemplar
Car / Cart 1 Moving ➡️
Touch Point
Car / Cart 2 Stationary
Contact occurs; shapes not yet deformed.
Acceptable Evidence (WIDA 1):
Both objects are drawn touching (or cut-cards pasted adjacent).
Direction of motion shown (arrow or label moving / moviéndose ).
Surface of objects is intact (no deformation yet).
Time 2: Split Second Later (Instante Después) Exemplar
Student Visual Work Exemplar
Car 1 Dent/Bent 💥
Car 2 Pushed ➡️
Forces compress materials; visible bend, flatten, or damage.
Acceptable Evidence (WIDA 1):
Contact area shows shape change (flat, bent, dented, or cracked).
Forces/interaction labeled (push, bend, break, bounce).
Damage checkmark matches drawn model (Yes / No).
Expected Sentence Frame Responses / Respuestas Esperadas:
Prompt 1 (Time 1):
"At Time 1, the objects touch / hit each other."
Acceptable: Single word "touch" or pasted card "First Touch".
Prompt 2 (Time 2):
"At Time 2, I see the material bend / flatten / break."
Acceptable: Any plausible deformation card ("Bends", "Breaks").
WIDA Level 1 (Entering) Proficiency Rubric Formative Assessment Look-Fors
Approaching (1 pt)
Draws one object or unrelated shapes. Does not show collision contact or shape difference between Time 1 and Time 2.
Proficient Level 1 (2 pts)
Draws two objects touching at Time 1. Shows a visual change (bent line, crack, flat side, or pasted tile) at Time 2.
Exceeding Level 1 (3 pts)
Includes arrows showing force/motion direction, labels parts in English or Spanish, and completes both sentence frames.
Bilingual Conferring Prompts (Teacher Questions / Preguntas para el maestro):
To elicit Time 1 (Contact):
"Where do they touch? Point to the contact."
