The Immune System
Objective
Explain the basic function of the immune system using a "soldiers protecting a fort" analogy.
Duration
40 Minutes
Key Vocab
Immune System, Proboscis, Nerves, Invaders, Saliva
1
The Castle Hook (5 min)
Begin by asking the class: "If you lived in a castle and wanted to keep it safe from enemies, what would you need?"
"Look for answers like: walls, guards/soldiers, a moat, a drawbridge, lookout towers. Explain that our bodies are like a castle, and we have our own team of guards."
2
Video Viewing (10 min)
Watch "Why Do Mosquito Bites Itch?" on SciShow Kids. Use the following timestamps for discussion:
- 0:58 (The Proboscis): Pause. Ask: "Imagine eating lunch through a straw. How does the shape of an animal's mouth change what it can eat?"
- 1:50 (The Soldiers): Pause. Identify the "invaders" (chemicals/spit). Ask: "Who are the soldiers in this story?"
- 2:30 (The Message): Pause. Ask: "Why does scratching make the itch worse?" (It irritates the skin and brings more fluid/immune response).
3
Body Defenders Comic Strip (20 min)
Hand out the Comic Strip Templates. Students will illustrate the battle happening inside their skin.
Panel 1: The Invader
Draw the mosquito inserting chemicals (invaders) into the skin castle.
Panel 2: The Alarm
Show the nerves sending a "HELP!" message to the brain and the area starting to swell.
Panel 3: The Soldiers
The Immune System "soldiers" arrive to clean up the chemicals and protect the fort.
4
Reflection & Extension (5 min)
Extension Topic: Explain that vaccines are like "training camp" for our soldiers. They show the soldiers a picture of a bad germ so they know how to fight it before it even gets into the castle.
Misconception Check: Remind students that the itch is actually caused by our own body trying to help us, not by the mosquito biting us with teeth.
