Labeling Theory 101
Focus on Reaction
It's not the act itself, but how others react to it that creates deviance.
Social Groups
Powerful groups define what is "normal" and who is an "outsider."
Master Status
A label can become your primary identity, overshadowing all other traits.
Primary vs. Secondary
Primary Deviance
The initial act of rule-breaking. It's often minor or forgotten. It doesn't change how you see yourself.
Example: Sneaking out once or a minor school prank.
Secondary Deviance
The result of the label. You accept the identity and commit more acts because "that's who I am."
Example: Being labeled a "troublemaker" and leaning into the role.
