What is a Watershed?
Think of a watershed like a giant, natural funnel. It is an area of land where all the water that falls on it drains into the same place—in our case, Nashoba Brook .
Every school playground and street in Acton is part of a watershed. When rain falls, it flows "downhill" across the Geosphere (land) until it reaches the Hydrosphere (water).
Reading a Topo Map
A Topographical Map shows the shape of the land using Contour Lines .
Rule 1: Steep vs. Flat
Close lines = steep ground. Far apart lines = flat ground.
Rule 2: The V-Shape
"V" shapes point upstream (towards higher ground).
Acton's "Low Point"
In Acton, Nashoba Brook is a main "low point." Any particle dropped on a hill in Acton will eventually try to find its way into the brook via gravity.
Gravity is the Engine
Water moves from high to low elevation.
Acton's Hydrosphere
Ice House Pond
A major feature in our watershed. It acts as a storage area for water. In the summer, evaporation can cause the water level here to drop, leaving behind concentrated particles.
Nashoba Brook
The "vein" of our watershed. It carries water through the woods and under our roads. This is where our foster turtles will live and hunt.
The Release Site
Our turtles need clean Hydrosphere particles to grow their shells correctly and stay healthy during their first winter.

Look at Route 2A on the map. Note how the brook flows under the road. If salt particles are spread on the road during a snowstorm, which part of the brook is in the most danger: the Northwest side (upstream) or the Southeast side (downstream)?

1. Road Salt
In winter, Acton trucks spread "salt" on roads like Route 2A to melt ice. This salt is made of trillions of tiny particles called Sodium Chloride .
The Particle Nature:
When salt touches water, it doesn't disappear—it dissolves . The particles spread out so far they become invisible to our eyes, but they still have weight and take up space.
2. Fertilizer
Lawns and school fields use fertilizer to grow grass. It contains particles like Nitrogen , Phosphorus , and Potassium .
The Particle Nature:
These particles are like energy shots for plants. But when they wash into the brook, they feed the wrong things—like algae!
Physiological Impact
Dehydration
If there is too much salt (particles) in the brook, it can pull fresh water out of the turtle's body through their skin, causing dangerous dehydration.
Irritation
High levels of salt particles can burn a hatchling's sensitive eyes and skin. It makes the water toxic to the small insects the turtle needs for food.
Oxygen Loss
Fertilizer particles cause algae blooms . When the algae dies, bacteria eat it and use up all the Oxygen in the water, leaving none for the turtles.
