Stars Are Projectiles
Stars are not stationary points. They orbit the galactic center at hundreds of kilometers per second.
Two Velocity Components:
• Radial Velocity: Motion directly toward or away from us (measured via Doppler shift).
• Proper Motion (\(\mu\)): Angled transverse motion across our sky, measured in arcseconds/year.
The Accumulation of Time
Because stars are so distant, proper motion is tiny in a human lifetime. But over 100,000 years, these small angles compound, drastically warping the constellations we recognize today.
