Need help? Put a thumb up quietly and your teacher will help!
Step 3 (Column A Words):
Type Tag, Swings, Kickball, Slide down cells A2 to A5 using Enter.
Step 4 (Column B Numbers):
Click cell B2. Type the vote counts down B2 to B5!
Typing Words in the Same Cell: Students often try to type "Tag 8" in one box. Remind them: Words have their own room (Col A), numbers have their own room (Col B)!
Holding the Enter Key: Pressing Enter too hard flies all the way down to Row 50! Teach: Quick tap and release!
Spelling Panic: Students worry about typing speed. Assure them: Keep the words simple; approximations are fine!
Accidental Overwrites: Clicking a cell and typing replaces the whole word. Remind them about Ctrl + Z.
Exit Check (3 Mins): Ask the class: "Which button dropped your cursor down like an elevator?" (Enter!) "Which cell has the word Activity?" (A1!)

Paints the background of the cell box. Perfect for color-coding categories!
Green = Complete
A
Changes the color of your letters. Keep it high-contrast so it is readable.
Golden Text
Golden Design Rule:
Always use Dark text on Light backgrounds or Light text on Dark backgrounds!

Pro Tip: Keep one type of information in each column so you can sort and filter easily!
Skill 3 Practice
Sort A → Z (Ascending)
Puts words in alphabetical order (A, B, C...) or numbers from lowest to highest (1, 2, 3...).
Sort Z → A (Descending)
Puts words in reverse order or numbers from biggest to smallest (find your top scores!).
1
Hover over the column letter you want to sort (e.g. Column A).
2
Click the small drop-down arrow next to the letter.
3
Choose "Sort Sheet A → Z" and watch the rows line up!
Remember: The entire row travels together so names and their votes never get mixed up!
Skill 4
Every formula MUST start with =
When you type the = (equals sign), you tell Google Sheets: "Do not just show what I type—calculate the answer!"
Addition: = 5 + 3
Subtraction: = 10 - 4
Cell A1: What you type
= 15 + 25
Cell A1: What Sheets displays
40
If you forget the = sign, the sheet will just display the plain text instead of doing the math!
Skill 4 Master
= SUM ( B2:B5 )
= Tells Google Sheets to calculate
SUM The action word for "Add them all up"
B2:B5 The cell range: from cell B2 all the way to B5!
Item (A)
Price (B)
Notebook (B2) $3
Pencils (B3) $2
Erasers (B4) $1
Markers (B5) $4
Total Cost: $10
Magic Perk: If you change the price of Markers from $4 to $6, the Total updates automatically!
Ready to Build
1
Create a 3-column table with custom headers.
2
Style your headers with Bold text and a Fill Color.
3
Type in 4 rows of data with numbers in the last column.
4
Use =SUM(...) at the bottom to calculate your total!
Open a blank Google Sheet, claim your grid, and start building!

Phase 2: ~25–35 Mins
Slide 6: Alignment & Borders 5 Mins
Demonstrate why numbers must be right-aligned (so decimal points and place values align vertically). Show how grid lines disappear in print unless "All Borders" is clicked.
Slides 7 & 8: Building Tables & Sorting A–Z 7 Mins
Emphasize Row 1 as the "Header Row." Explain that sorting a column rearranges the entire row so names and counts remain matched. Model: View > Freeze > 1 row so titles never disappear when scrolling.
Slides 9, 10 & 11: Formulas, =SUM, & The Hands-On Mission 15–20 Mins
Write =SUM(C2:C5) on the board. Break it down: the = is the ignition key, SUM means add, and the colon : means "through". Release students to execute Slide 11's classroom mission.
Forgetting the "=": Typing 5+5 results in the text "5+5" sitting in the cell. Remind them: No equals, no magic!
Reversing Coordinates: Writing 2B instead of B2 will trigger an error or point to nothing.
Accidental Overwrites: Clicking once on a cell and typing replaces everything. Remind them to double-click to edit one character.
Typing $ signs in calculations: Encourage typing plain numbers first, then using the dollar icon formatting button.
Worksheet Answer Key (Quick Reference) Teacher Edition
Part 1: Cell Addresses: Dog = A2, Cat = B2, Fish = C3. Coordinates: Column comes first (letters), Row second (numbers).
Part 2: Bucket = Fill/Background Color; Bold 'B' = Header text weight; Left-align = Words; Right-align = Numbers.
Part 3: Row 1 = Headers; Sort A–Z orders words alphabetically and numbers from lowest to highest.
Part 4: Equation must start with =; =SUM(B2:B5) adds cells B2 through B5; Total cost in sample = $10.
