Science is excellent at describing the objective world—things we can measure, like light waves or neuron firing rates. But philosophy asks about the subjective —the internal "feeling" of an experience. These are called Qualia .
The Thought Experiment: Mary's Room
Imagine Mary, a brilliant scientist who lives her entire life in a black-and-white room. She learns everything there is to know about the physics of color : she knows about wavelengths, how the retina processes light, and exactly which neurons fire in the brain when someone sees "red."
One day, Mary is released from the room and sees a bright red apple for the very first time.

Descartes wanted to find certainty. He threw away everything that could possibly be doubted.
The senses? They deceive (illusions).
The external world? Could be a dream.

The biggest critique of Descartes came from Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia . She asked: If the mind has no physical weight, shape, or location, how can it "push" on a physical brain to make your arm move?

Despite the flaws in "interaction," many people still feel like dualists. When you say "my body," you imply that there is a "you" that owns the body.
