The Levallois technique (Middle Paleolithic, c. 300 – 40 ka) is a prepared-core method. Unlike earlier industries, the knapper must carefully shape the entire stone (core) to pre-determine the size and shape of a single, final "preferential" flake. This requires multi-stage planning and abstract visualization.
