In Tanzania, volcanic ash preserved the footprints of two hominids walking together 3.6 million years ago.

The Crawler Hook (15 mins)
Clear a path in the classroom. Divide students into "Crawlers" and "Walkers." Task: Both groups must transport a basket of items (balls, books, or fruit) from point A to point B. The crawlers must stay on hands and knees.
"Observe how the crawlers must use their teeth to hold the basket handle or drag it awkwardly, while walkers move fluidly."

1. The Human Yardstick (10 mins)
Stretch a long rope across the room (roughly 4 meters). This represents the last 4 million years.
"Where do you think Sapiens show up?" Have students stand where they think we appear. Most will stand in the middle. Walk all the way to the very end of the rope—the last 30cm—to show our species' relative youth.
2. Scaled Construction (35 mins)
Students use the Hominid Blueprint to create their personal timelines. This is a cross-curricular task involving math and history.
Teacher Alert: The Overlap
Ensure students do not draw the hominids in a single straight line. They should draw them as horizontal bars that can overlap. For example: Homo erectus and Homo habilis overlapped for nearly 500,000 years!
