Instructional guidelines for leading students through the 5-Day Visual History Portfolio sequence.
Portfolio Concept
Rather than choosing one project, students complete all 3 over five days. This scaffolding structures their cognitive energy, ensuring they cover geography (Day 1), movements/art (Days 2-3), and government storytelling (Days 4-5).
5-Day Pacing Guide
Day 1: Intro slides; complete the Map of My Mind drawing.Day 2-3: Complete Poster Planner; execute final protest poster.Day 4: Practice panels on Comic Scratch Paper.Day 5: Execute Final Comic Strip; showcase portfolio!
Essential Scaffolding Strategies

Word-Banks & Letter Tracing
Ensure key terms (e.g., Fairness, Chavez, Rhythm, Hughes, Vote, Law ) are written clearly on the whiteboard with matching icons. Allow students with lower fine-motor/spelling skills to trace words.

Scribing During "Scratch Paper" Phase
On Day 2 (Poster Planner) and Day 4 (Comic Scratch Paper), circulate and scribe captions/slogans for students. Let them focus on visual planning first, then assist in translating verbal stories to written words.

1-Minute Portfolio Showcase
On Day 5, assess students by pointing to each of their three final artifacts (Map, Poster, Comic) and asking: "Who is this about?" or "What is happening here?" Grade their comprehension orally.
💡 Poster Day Tip: Provide heavy sheets of blank drawing paper or colored poster board for Days 2 & 3. Students can paste their Page 3 planning sheet to the back of their final posters.
