Earth rotates very fast—over 1,000 miles per hour! But it is so huge that we don't feel the spinning at all.

Rotation
To rotate means to spin in one spot.
The Earth rotates like a top. This makes day and night!

Revolution
One orbit = 1 Year
To revolve means to go around the Sun.
This path is called an orbit. It takes 365 days to finish!
The Moon's Dance
Mirror Light
The Moon does not make its own light. It reflects the Sun!
Orbiting Earth
The Moon revolves around the Earth once a month.
Changing Phases
Because it moves, we see different amounts of its lit side.
Waves of Light
Light travels in waves. In space, light waves travel very fast until they hit something.
We see planets because light waves from the Sun bounce off them!

The Earth is always moving. Even when you are sleeping, our planet is busy! It moves in two special ways.
1. The Big Spin
First, the Earth spins. This is called rotation . It takes 24 hours to spin one time. When your side of Earth faces the Sun, it is day. When you spin away from the Sun, it is night.
2. The Big Circle
Second, the Earth goes around the Sun. This is called revolution . Earth follows a path called an orbit . It takes one whole year to go around the Sun.
The Moon is busy, too! It revolves around the Earth. The Moon does not have its own light. It is like a mirror. It reflects light from the Sun. As the Moon moves, it looks like it changes shape. These shapes are called phases .
How do we see the planets? We use our eyes to catch light waves . Light waves from the Sun hit the planets and bounce back to us. That is why the night sky looks so bright and beautiful!
