Ask students to close their eyes and sit upright.
Script: "Imagine I am holding a bright yellow, heavy lemon. I'm placing it on a cutting board. I take a sharp knife and slice through the peel. You see the mist of citric acid spray into the air. Now, I pick up a slice. It's dripping with tart juice. On the count of three, you're going to take a huge bite. 1... 2... 3... BITE."
Debrief: "How many of you felt your mouth water? Why? There is no lemon. Your brain associated my words (signal) with the reflex of eating fruit."

The Little Albert Experiment
Researchers: John B. Watson & Rosalie Rayner (1920)
The Subject
"Albert B." was a healthy, stable 9-month-old infant living at a hospital where his mother worked. Watson and Rayner wanted to see if they could classically condition a fear response in a human baby.
The Baseline (Pre-test)
Initially, Albert showed no fear of various "neutral" objects: a white rat, a rabbit, a dog, a monkey, and even burning newspapers. He reached out to play with them. However, like most infants, he reacted with fear (crying) to a loud noise created by striking a steel bar with a hammer.
The Conditioning
When Albert was 11 months old, the researchers presented him with the white rat. Every time Albert reached for the rat, Watson struck the steel bar behind him. This was repeated several times over several weeks.
The Result
"The instant the rat was shown, the baby began to cry. Almost instantly he turned sharply to the left, fell over on [his] left side, raised himself on all fours and began to crawl away so rapidly that he was caught with difficulty..." — Watson's Lab Notes
Ethical Problems
• Informed Consent: It is unclear if Albert's mother knew the full extent of the distress being caused.
• No Deconditioning: Albert left the hospital before Watson could attempt to remove the fear.
• Harm: Deliberately causing psychological distress to an infant.
