DURING/AFTER CONDITIONING

An originally neutral stimulus that, after association with a US, triggers a CR (e.g., Bell).

Blueprint Analysis: Sample Answer
The distinction matters because it clarifies the trigger of the behavior. The UR is triggered by a stimulus that is biologically pre-programmed to cause a reaction (no learning required). The CR is triggered by a stimulus that was previously neutral but has gained power through association (learning occurred).
By labeling them differently, psychologists can track the progress of acquisition and evaluate whether a behavior is a reflex or a learned association.

Core Concept: Spontaneous recovery suggests that extinction is suppression , not unlearning . The neural pathways of the original association remain intact but are inhibited. This is why "lapsed" behaviors or phobias can resurface suddenly after being dormant.
Example: A former smoker who hasn't smoked in years (Extinction) might feel a sudden, intense craving (Spontaneous Recovery) when they return to a place where they used to smoke, even if they haven't been triggered in a long time.

"Our goal was to determine if an infant could be conditioned to fear a neutral object."
Albert, a healthy 9-month-old, was initially tested for fear of various stimuli: a white rat, a rabbit, a dog, a monkey, and burning newspapers. He showed zero fear response. He was "phlegmatic" and "unemotional."
At 11 months, the conditioning began. Every time Albert reached for the white rat (CS), researcher John B. Watson struck a 4-foot steel bar with a hammer (US) directly behind the child's head.
Findings: Generalization
After seven pairings, Albert showed intense distress when the rat appeared alone. More shockingly, five days later, the fear had generalized .
Albert now screamed and crawled away from a rabbit, a dog, a sealskin coat, and even a Santa Claus mask with cotton balls for a beard. He had learned not just to fear the rat, but the concept of "white and furry."

1. Informed Consent
Participants must be told enough about the research to decide if they want to participate. Parents must give surrogate consent for minors.
Watson's mother was a wet nurse at the hospital; some argue she was pressured to comply.

Researchers must protect participants from physical or psychological harm. The risk should not exceed that found in daily life.
Albert was subjected to deliberate psychological trauma and long-lasting phobias.
3. Right to Withdraw
Participants (or their parents) have the right to stop the experiment at any time without penalty.
The conditioning continued even when Albert showed extreme distress.
4. Debriefing
After the study, participants must be told the purpose and results. Any negative effects must be addressed or undone.
