The Equipment Schedule is the receipt for the job. It contains the hard data required for ordering and commissioning.

PRO TIP:
Always verify voltage on the schedule BEFORE wiring. Mistakes here lead to fried motors and blown breakers.
Duct Sizing Logic
The 400 CFM Rule
In standard commercial AC, we typically design for 400 CFM per Ton of cooling capacity.
Step-by-Step Interpretation:
1 Locate the main trunk from the AHU.
2 Identify the total system CFM (from schedule).
3 Watch the duct dimensions decrease as branches peel off.
QUIZ MOMENT
If a duct starts at 24" x 12" carrying 2000 CFM, and a branch takes 500 CFM...
"Will the trunk after the branch be smaller, larger, or the same size?"
ANSWER: SMALLER!
LEVEL UP: HOSPITAL MECHANICALS
Pressure Control
In hospitals, plans show + (positive) and - (negative) pressure zones. Look for these symbols near door openings.

Look for HEPA labels at the terminal device. This indicates specialized diffusers that require careful handling.

02 PLAN READING SCAVENGER HUNT
Reference: M-101
1. Locate the Equipment Schedule on the blueprint. Find RTU-1 and list its specifications:
Cooling Capacity (Tons)
Total Supply Air (CFM)
Electrical (Voltage/Phase)
Heating Capacity (MBH)
2. Analyze the Supply Main:
What are the starting dimensions of the main supply duct as it leaves the RTU-1 curb? Why does the duct size decrease after the first three branch runs?
3. Fire Safety Identification:
Identify the locations of any Fire Dampers (FD) shown on Sheet M-101. Why are they placed specifically where they are?
4. Exhaust System Details:
Find EF-1. Where is the physical location of the fan (Roof or Inline)? What is its rated CFM and what room is it serving?
03 CALCULATIONS & DUCT SIZING

The Scenario
A technician is installing a new branch duct to serve a conference room. The room requires 800 CFM to satisfy the cooling load. The architect limits the duct height to 10 inches max due to ceiling height constraints.

Calculate the required duct width:
Assumption: Design for 0.1" friction loss per 100ft of duct.

Velocity Check:
What will be the air velocity (FPM) in this duct? Is this acceptable for a quiet office environment?

Diffuser Selection:
If each 24x24 supply diffuser can handle 200 CFM without excessive noise, how many diffusers should be drawn in the conference room?
FIND THE MISTAKE
On a mechanical plan, the designer has labeled a trunk duct as "12x12" carrying "2500 CFM". Explain why this is a major error and what would happen if the duct was installed as labeled.

Part 03: Calculations & Sizing
A: Duct Width
~ 18 inches to 20 inches
Explanation: For 800 CFM @ 0.1 friction loss, an equivalent round is roughly 14". Translating to 10" high, we need ~18" width. Rounding to 20" is safer for velocity.
B: Velocity Check
~ 576 to 640 FPM
Evaluation: YES, this is acceptable. Commercial office targets are usually < 1000 FPM in main branches and ~600-800 FPM at diffusers for noise control.
C: Diffuser Count
4 Diffusers
Math: 800 total CFM / 200 CFM per diffuser = 4 units.
The Mistake Explained:
TRUNK SIZE: 12" x 12" (1 sq ft)
AIRFLOW: 2500 CFM
VELOCITY = 2500 FPM
At 2500 FPM, the duct will create extreme static pressure and excessive noise. The blower motor would likely ramp up or fail due to high head pressure. Most commercial trunks should stay below 1200-1500 FPM.
