Core Concept
01 / The Big Picture
What is Energy?
Energy is the ability to do work or cause change. It never disappears—it changes forms!
Motion
Rolling balls, running legs, turning wheels
Light
Sunbeams, flashlight rays, computer screens
Sound
Vibrations traveling through air to ears
Thermal (Heat)
Tiny jiggling particles creating warmth!
Today's mission: Zoom in on Thermal Energy and uncover its secret rules!
Microscopic View
02 / The Particle Dance
Everything is Made of Jiggling Particles!
Thermal energy is simply the energy of moving particles inside an object.
❄ Cool / Low Energy
Slow
O
O
O
O
• Particles huddle close together
• Sluggish, slow vibration
• Example: An ice cube in your freezer
🔥 Hot / High Energy
Super Fast!
O
O
O
O
• Particles spread out & bounce wildly
• Rapid, high-energy collisions
• Example: Steam from boiling cocoa
More particle speed = More thermal energy = Higher temperature!
Science Showdown
03 / Key Distinction
Temperature vs. Heat
Scientists never mix these up. Here is the difference:
Temperature
The "Speedometer"
Measures the average speed of particles in a material.
Tool: Thermometer (°C or °F)
It tells us how hot or cold something is!
Heat
The "Delivery Van"
The transfer or flow of thermal energy from one object to another.
Action: Heat is energy on the move!
When thermal energy stops moving, we just have temperature.
🤔
Brain Check: Which has more thermal energy—a cup of hot tea or an entire frozen iceberg?
The Iceberg! (Billions more particles)
Universal Law
04 / The One-Way Street
The Golden Rule of Heat Transfer
Heat has only ONE direction of travel:
🔥
HOT OBJECT
Higher thermal energy • Fast particles
HEAT ALWAYS FLOWS
Never backwards!
❄
COLD OBJECT
Lower thermal energy • Slower particles
Science Myth Busted: "Cold doesn't move!"
When you hold an ice cube, cold isn't entering your hand. Heat leaves your warm hand and enters the ice!
Way #1 to Move
05 / Heat Transfer
Conduction: Direct Touch
Heat passes directly between objects that are physically touching.
How Particles Do It:
1. Fast particles in the hot object collide with slower particles in the cooler object.
2. Like bumper cars, the fast particles bump the slow ones, speeding them up!
3. Works best in solids because particles are packed tightly together.
Real-world: A metal spoon left in hot soup gets burning hot in minutes.
Conductors vs. Insulators:
Good Conductors (Pass heat FAST):
Copper, aluminum, iron, steel, gold
Insulators (Block or SLOW heat):
Wood, rubber, plastic, fleece, air pockets
Smart Design: Metal frying pan with a wooden or silicone handle!
Key memory trick: Con-DUCK-tion = Direct Contact!
Way #2 to Move
06 / Heat Transfer
Convection: Flowing Currents
Heat moving through liquids and gases in circulating cycles.
The Convection Cycle
Warm fluid rises • Cool fluid sinks
1. Heated fluid spreads out, becomes lighter (less dense), and floats UP!
2. Cooling fluid packs together, becomes heavier (more dense), and sinks DOWN!
This continuous loop is called a Convection Current.
Convection in Action:
🍲
Boiling Pot of Pasta
Water at the hot bottom rises; cooler surface water plunges down.
🎈
Hot Air Balloons
A burner heats air inside the envelope, lifting the giant balloon skyward!
🌬
Ocean & Wind Currents
Sun heats the equator; warm air rises and creates global winds and storms.
Why not solids? Solid particles are locked in place and cannot circulate!
Key memory trick: Con-VEC-tion = Circulation in liquids & gases!
Way #3 to Move
07 / Heat Transfer
Radiation: Invisible Waves
Heat traveling through empty space in electromagnetic waves—no touching required!
The Sun
Traveled 93 million miles through the vacuum of outer space with zero matter to touch!
Campfire Glow
Hold your hands up facing the fire and feel warmth instantly radiate onto your palms.
Heat Lamps
Keeps restaurant french fries crispy warm or warms baby chicks in a farm coop.
!
Radiation's Superpower: No particles needed!
Conduction and Convection MUST have matter. Radiation can travel right through a total vacuum!
Whole-Class Investigation
08 / Detective Mission
Heat Detective Challenge!
Which type of heat transfer is at work in each mystery case?
CASE #1
Hot Sand on Bare Feet
You step barefoot onto sunny beach sand and immediately yell "Ouch!"
Method: CONDUCTION
Direct contact between feet and hot sand grains.
CASE #2
Soaring Hawk
A hawk circles upward into the sky without flapping its wings once.
Method: CONVECTION
Riding rising columns of warm air (thermals).
CASE #3
Warm Dog in a Sunbeam
A puppy snoozes peacefully on the rug through a closed glass window.
Method: RADIATION
Infrared light waves pass through glass to warm the pup.
Can an object experience all three at once? Yes—think of an outdoor campfire!

09 / Summary
What Every Physicist Remembers
Review these core energy laws before our hands-on lab:
1
Thermal Energy = Jiggling Particles: The faster particles vibrate or zip around, the higher the temperature.
2
The One-Way Law: Heat strictly moves from HOTTER objects to COOLER objects until they reach equilibrium.
3
The Three Heat Movers: Conduction (touch), Convection (fluids swirling), and Radiation (space waves).
4
Trapping vs. Passing: Conductors let heat dash through quickly; insulators trap heat and slow it down.
