Heat Detectives
The Expanding Bottle & Balloon Experiment
Discover how thermal energy makes invisible air molecules speed up, bounce farther apart, and expand right before your eyes!
Lab Question
Can heat push air?

THE SCIENCE OF MATTER
What Happens When Matter Warms Up?
All matter is made of tiny particles called molecules that never stop moving!
Cold Temperatures Low Energy
• Molecules move slowly and vibrate gently.
• They huddle close together in a tight space.
• Result: Matter contracts (shrinks inward).
Takes up smaller space
Warm Temperatures High Energy
• Molecules gain energy and move super fast.
• They collide and push farther apart.
• Result: Matter expands (spreads outward).
Takes up greater space
Detective Mission: Can we see this molecular motion happening with air trapped inside a bottle?
LAB PREPARATION
Lab Station Equipment Check
Confirm each item is at your station before we begin the experiment.
1 Empty Bottle
Standard 16–20 oz plastic or glass bottle filled only with normal room-temperature air.
1 Latex Balloon
Uninflated 9-inch rubber balloon stretched gently to prepare the neck.
Warm Water Bowl
Deep container filled with warm tap water (teacher-monitored heat bath).
Ice Water Bowl
Container loaded with ice cubes and cold water for the chilling test.
Safety First: Carry water bowls with two hands. Never splash, and wipe spills immediately with paper towels!
SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY
Form Your Scientific Hypothesis
Make a reasoned prediction before testing. What will happen to the balloon?
COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE WITH YOUR TEAM:
“If we place the bottle into the warm water bath, then the balloon will [ PREDICTION ] because [ SCIENTIFIC REASON ].”
Prediction A
The balloon will stay completely flat and limp.
Prediction B
The balloon will slowly stand up and inflate!
Prediction C
The balloon will get sucked inside the bottle mouth.
Write your hypothesis on your lab worksheet now. Ready to test?
INVESTIGATION • PHASE 1
Testing Heat: Step-by-Step
Follow these exact steps with your lab group.
1
Seal the Bottle
Stretch the opening of the balloon over the mouth of the empty bottle. Make sure it is completely airtight!
Airtight seal
2
Lower in Heat
Hold the bottle upright and submerge the bottom half into the warm water bowl. Do not tilt!
Submerge for 60 sec
3
Observe & Record
Watch the balloon closely. What happens to the rubber? Draw and write your observations on page 1 of your packet.
Track every change
Look closely: Is anyone blowing air into the balloon? Where is the push coming from?
INVESTIGATION • PHASE 2
Testing Cold: The Reversal Test
Now let's remove the thermal energy and see what happens!
4
Transfer Fast
Carefully lift the bottle out of the warm water and immediately place it into the ice water bath.
Quick transfer
5
Count to 30
Hold the bottle steady in the ice water. Keep your eyes locked on the balloon. What is happening now?
Count 30 seconds
6
Compare Results
Did the balloon deflate? Did your hypothesis match what happened in both tests? Record your data.
Data complete
Think Ahead: Why did cooling the bottle make the balloon collapse without any air escaping?
THE SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION
Why Did the Balloon Inflate?
Here is what happened inside the bottle at the invisible molecular level!
When Heated (Warm Water)
1. Energy Transfers: Heat moves through the bottle wall into the trapped air.
2. Faster Particles: Air molecules speed up and vigorously bounce off each other.
3. Expansion: The air pushes outward with force, filling the balloon!
When Cooled (Ice Water)
1. Energy Leaves: Thermal energy transfers out of the air into the ice bath.
2. Slower Particles: Air molecules slow down and huddle close together.
3. Contraction: The air takes up less volume, deflating the balloon!
VOCABULARY WORD: THERMAL EXPANSION — The tendency of matter to increase in volume as temperature rises.
REAL-WORLD SCIENCE
Thermal Expansion in Everyday Life
Engineers and scientists must plan for heat expansion every single day!
Hot Air Balloons
Burners heat the air inside the giant envelope. As the air expands, it becomes lighter than outside air and rises!
Gas Expansion
Bridge Joints
Highway bridges have metal expansion teeth so steel and concrete can safely expand on hot summer days without cracking!
Solid Expansion
Thermometers
When liquid warms up inside the tube, it expands and climbs up the numbered scale, showing the exact temperature!
Liquid Expansion
