SMall Group WBL Project
Duration: 2 to 3 Weeks
WBL Environmental Officer Crew
Industry Standard Housekeeping Protocols
The Rotation Brief
Week 1-3 Core Duties
Environmental Control
• Audit & Inventory: Label, quantify, and track all active fluid containers.

Shop Waste Mapping
Visual Safety & Compliance
Every waste container needs a mapped home.
Your waste management map acts as the first line of defense during external safety audits. Your map must clearly identify the locations of:
Used Oil & Filters
Used Engine Coolant
Flammable Solvents
Aerosols & Batteries
MAP SPECS
Must label hazardous waste containment zones.
Must mark spill kit locations and emergency shut-offs.
Must identify physical waste disposal flow routes.
MAP TEMPLATE IN GUIDEBOOK
Cross-contamination alert: NEVER store brake fluid in the used oil container. Always double check your labels before pouring.
Standard Operating Procedures
Safety & Execution Cards
01
Required PPE
Define specific gloves, eyewear, and aprons needed to handle each individual chemical waste.
OSHA Compliance
02
Handling Steps
Write clear, numbered, safe Transfer & Emptying guidelines. Avoid any spills or contact with skin.
Zero Spills
03
Spill Protocol
Specify actions for leaks. Define secondary containment limits, absorbent choice, and disposal.
Rapid Response
04
Approved Route
Determine how and when to schedule commercial recycling, recovery, or safe disposal.
EPA Standards
SOP Templates and Safety Container Cards are located in your student rotation workbook package!
Evaluation Criteria
Grading Standards
Compliance Audit Thresholds
This project simulates real-world EPA & OSHA industry audits. Your group grade is based on:
40% Daily Housekeeping Logs & Shop Cleanliness (Daily Grade)
30% SOP Compliance Cards & Safety Labels (Technical Grade)
30% Waste Management Floor Map (Design & Accuracy Grade)
EPA Audit "Auto-Fails"
• Any unlabeled, unmarked, or cross-contaminated waste drum.
• Any unreported or uncleaned fluid spills on the shop floor.
• Failure to clean and dry-mop the auto bays at shift end.

INSTRUCTOR MANUAL
3-Week Pacing & Milestones
Week 1: Shop Audit & Mapping Days 1 - 5
Instructor Role: Lead students in a complete floor tour. Point out chemical storage lockers, fire exits, secondary containment basins, and emergency showers. Ensure students use the layout grids in the Guidebook correctly to scale the shop.
Week 2: Scaffolded SOP & Safety Labeling Days 6 - 10
Instructor Role: Guide chemical research using active SDS sheets (either print or online). Review students' draft SOPs to verify that correct PPE (e.g., face shields during coolant transfers) and hazard classes (e.g., Flammable vs. Corrosive) are detailed.
Week 3: Operation Run & Pitch Days 11 - 15
Instructor Role: Conduct daily unannounced compliance checks. Score the students on continuous daily logbooks, spill report ready-states, and actual auto bay cleanliness at the end of every work shift.
Critical Misconceptions & Correction Guides
Common Student Misconception Correction & Educational Response "All oily liquids can go into the same used motor oil container." Explain that mixing brake fluid, paint solvent, or transmission fluid with engine oil ruins recycling potential and generates volatile organic compounds. "Water in secondary containment is harmless and can be ignored." Standing water reduces basin capacity and masks chemical leaks. It must be dry-vaced or mopped immediately. "A small drip of coolant doesn't need to be documented in logs." Small leaks lead to larger structural failures or environmental citations. Everything must be reported and logged on daily tracker forms.

WBL Evaluation Rubric
Use this comprehensive rubric to grade students on their environmental design deliverables and operational compliance.
Evaluation Category Exemplary (4 pts) Proficient (3 pts) Needs Improvement (1-2 pts) Floor Mapping & zoning Map includes all seven critical fluids, safety lanes, emergency exits, and spill kits. Scale and legend are completely accurate. Map includes most fluids and equipment. Legend is complete but scaling is slightly misaligned. Map is missing major safety areas or lacks a functional, legible legend.
