Instructional Objective
Students will be able to identify and explain the different phases of the Moon (waxing, waning, gibbous, crescent) based on the relative positions of the Sun, Earth, and Moon using visual pattern recognition of light.

Core Visual Patterns
The Waxing Pattern
Light grows from the right side . Occurs when the Moon moves from New Moon toward Full Moon.
The Waning Pattern
Light shrinks, visible only on the left side . Occurs as the Moon returns to New Moon.
Crescent (Curved)
Less than 50% of the moon is illuminated. Appears as a curved sliver of light.
Gibbous (Swollen)
More than 50% of the moon is illuminated but not quite a complete circle.
CRITICAL MISCONCEPTION ALERT
Students often believe Earth's shadow blocks the Moon's light during monthly phases. Clarify during the roleplay that the shadow on the Moon is its own unlit half facing away from the Sun, exactly like night on Earth! Earth's shadow only blocks the Moon during rare lunar eclipses.

Human Orbit Roleplay Choreography
Divide students into groups of 3 (or run as a whole-class circle with rotating roles). Tape a 4-foot radius circle on the floor to represent the Moon's orbit.

Role A: The Sun (The Light Source)
Stands in a fixed spot 10 feet away holding a bright yellow ball or acting as the anchor point of light. The Sun must project light in a constant, single direction toward the orbit ring.

Role B: The Earth (The Observer)
Stands directly in the center of the taped orbit circle. Earth must rotate on its axis (spin slowly) to observe the Moon as it travels along the perimeter of the orbit circle.

Role C: The Moon (The Reflector)
Holds the foam ball (half painted black/half white, or simply half lit by the "Sun"). The Moon walks counterclockwise around the circle, keeping the white illuminated side strictly facing the Sun at all times.
Facilitation Questioning Guide
Q1: When the Moon is directly between the Earth and the Sun, what does Earth see?
Expected: Nothing/Darkness (New Moon), because the lit side faces completely away from Earth.
Q2: As the Moon moves counterclockwise, does the light on the right side grow or shrink?
Expected: It grows from the right side (Waxing). First as a crescent, then half (first quarter), then gibbous.
Q3: Why does the Moon's shape seem to change if the Sun always lights up exactly half of it?
Expected: Because our perspective on Earth changes as the Moon orbits us; we see different fractions of that lit half.
Formative Assessment Check
Circulate during the roleplay. Ensure the student playing the "Moon" does not turn the white face of the ball toward Earth; it must remain pointing toward the "Sun." Have the "Earth" student call out when they see "waxing crescent" versus "waning crescent" based on right/left light patterns.

The Cosmic Alignment
Concept 01
1. The Sun
Our central powerhouse. It stays fixed and always illuminates exactly 50% of the Moon .
2. The Earth
Our home base. From here, we look out into space to observe the changing angles of the Moon's lit side.
3. The Moon
Our traveling companion. It orbits Earth counterclockwise once every 29.5 days .
Key Rule: The Moon does NOT create its own light! It reflects light from the Sun.
Two Perspectives of Light
Concept 02
Space Perspective
If you look down from deep space, exactly half of the Earth and half of the Moon are always lit by the Sun.
This perspective never changes! Half is lit, half is dark.
Earth Perspective
Because we look from the center of the orbit , we see different amounts of that illuminated half.
This is why we see "phases" or shapes of light!
Phase Changes are a perspective pattern, NOT Earth casting a shadow!
Waxing: Growing Light
Concept 03
Waxing = "Growing"
As the Moon travels from New Moon to Full Moon, the amount of light we see from Earth is constantly increasing .
Visual Pattern Cue:
Waxing light always starts on and fills the RIGHT SIDE of the Moon's face!

After a Full Moon, the illuminated portion we see from Earth is getting smaller as it returns to New Moon.
Visual Pattern Cue:
Waning light always recedes, leaving light visible only on the LEFT SIDE of the Moon!
Mnemonic: "Waning" sounds like "Draining"—draining the light away!
