Tooth Swap Science: Teacher Guide
Why Baby Teeth Loosen and Adult Teeth Grow In Beneath the Gums
45–55 Minutes
Big Question Where do wobbly teeth go, and what pushes them out?
Key Mechanism Root resorption (roots gently dissolve from below)
Tooth Counts 20 Primary (Baby) vs. 32 Permanent (Adult)
Standards NGSS 1-LS1-1, 1-LS3-1 & NHES 1 (Health)
Learning Objectives (SWBAT)
Identify that permanent adult teeth grow directly beneath baby teeth in the jawbone.
Explain that growing adult teeth cause baby tooth roots to safely melt away (resorption), making baby teeth loose and wobbly.
Differentiate between the 20 smaller baby teeth and 32 stronger adult teeth designed for a growing jaw.
Demonstrate safe habits when experiencing a loose tooth (no aggressive yanking, gentle wiggling, clean hands).
Materials List
Tooth Swap Slide Deck
Tooth Detective Worksheet (1 per student)
Small handheld mirrors (optional, for mouth check)
Crayons or colored pencils
Chart paper for group tooth tally
Step-by-Step Lesson Sequence
Time Phase Teacher Moves & Student Actions 10 min Hook & The Wobbly Mystery Ask students: "Raise a quiet thumb if you have lost a tooth or have a wobbly one right now!" Show a fallen baby tooth illustration. Ask: "Where did the long root go? Did it break off, or did something magic happen inside your jaw?" Record class predictions on chart paper. 15 min Slide Tour & Diagram Study Present Tooth Swap Slides . Guide students through cross-section diagrams showing the baby tooth resting in the gum line and the adult tooth bud waiting underneath. Introduce the concept of root dissolving (resorption) like an ice pop melting gently against warm pressure. 15 min Investigation Worksheet Distribute the Tooth Swap Diagram Worksheet . Model how to sequence the 4 stages of tooth replacement: (1) Baby tooth anchored, (2) Adult tooth grows upward, (3) Root dissolves, (4) Wobbly tooth releases and adult tooth crowns. Students color and label their diagrams. 10 min Synthesis & Tooth Rules Review the 3 Golden Wobbly Tooth Rules : (1) Wiggle gently with clean tongue or clean fingers, (2) Never yank with doors or strings (protects tender gums), (3) Keep the empty gap clean. Complete quick formative check.

Teacher Script & Guiding Questions
Explaining Why We Get Two Sets of Teeth (The Shoe Size Metaphor):
"Could you wear your baby shoes today? No way! Your feet grew much bigger! Your head and jaws are growing bigger too. Baby teeth are like tiny shoes—they fit perfectly when you were a toddler. But as your jaw grows wider and stronger, you need bigger, stronger teeth to chew adult food for the next 70+ years!"
Explaining The Dissolving Root (The Ice Pop Analogy):
"When an adult tooth gets ready to come up, it sends a chemical signal that says: 'Time to make room!' The roots of your baby tooth begin to melt away, just like an ice pop melting on a sunny sidewalk. The body reabsorbs the minerals to make the new adult tooth super strong! That is why fallen baby teeth look hollow or short."
Addressing Primary Grade Misconceptions
Common Misconception Scientific Reality & Correction "Baby teeth never had roots because the tooth came out looking like a little flat crown." Baby teeth had long, strong roots! As the adult tooth grew upward, it melted the root away so the tooth could release painlessly. "If an adult tooth falls out, another one will grow behind it." We only get ONE set of permanent teeth. Once an adult tooth grows in, we must protect it with daily brushing and flossing forever. "Wobbly teeth should be pulled out fast by tying string to a doorknob." Yanking teeth before roots are completely dissolved tears fragile gum tissue. Teeth should only be wiggled gently until they fall out naturally.
Differentiation & Learning Accommodations
Emerging Writers
Provide cut-and-paste picture sequence cards instead of written captions. Allow verbal explanations during check-ins.
Multilingual Learners (ELL)
Use color-coded diagram arrows (Blue = baby tooth, Green = adult tooth, Pink = gums). Pair with bilingual vocabulary cards.
Extension / High Flyers
Have students compare human tooth replacement (diphyodont = 2 sets) with sharks (polyphyodont = endless conveyor belts of replacement teeth!).
End-of-Lesson Formative Assessment Checks
1. Thumbs Check: "Point to where the adult tooth waits before it comes in: Above the baby tooth or below in the jawbone?" (Jawbone below)
2. Quick Share: "Why do baby teeth get loose?" Look for: Adult tooth pushes up and melts/dissolves the root!

The Wobbly Tooth Mystery
Have You Lost a Tooth?
When a baby tooth falls out, it looks tiny and hollow underneath like a little white cap!
Did the root break off? Or did something amazing happen inside your gums?
The Secret Below
Your baby tooth did have long roots to keep it tight while you were little!
A new adult tooth growing directly underneath made the roots safely melt away!
Let's peek inside the gums to see how it works!

The Root Melts Away
The growing adult tooth touches the baby tooth roots, making them dissolve until the tooth wiggles.
Tight Baby Tooth
The baby tooth sits firmly in the jaw with long strong roots to help toddlers chew food.
Adult Tooth Takes Over!
The baby tooth drops out naturally. The big, strong adult tooth pokes through into the smile gap!
Adult Tooth Grows Upward
Deep in the jawbone, a permanent adult tooth bud wakes up and starts growing up toward the surface.
