State Shift Teacher Guide State Shift
Teacher Facilitation Guide
Grade Level
4th Grade
Learning Objective
Students will identify and explain real-world examples of condensation and evaporation by observing physical changes and analyzing a cooling/heating cycle.
Materials Needed
Cold soda can
State Shift Slides
Condensation Detective Worksheet
State Shift Sort Cards
Cycle Sketchpad
Colored pencils/crayons
Key Vocabulary
Evaporation
Liquid → Gas (Add Heat)
Condensation
Gas → Liquid (Remove Heat)
Water Vapor
Water in its invisible gas state.
Lesson Procedure
5 min
The Hook: Mystery Moisture
Place a cold soda can on a desk where all students can see it (or give one to each small group).
Prompt: "Look at the outside of this can. Where did that water come from? Did the can leak? Is it sweating?"
15 min
Guided Viewing: Science in Action
Play the "Matter & State Changes" video. Use the following pause points for discussion:
0:48 (Clay): Is it still a solid? (Yes, shape changes ≠ state change).
1:58 (Boiling): Where did the water go? Is it destroyed?
2:13 (Cold Can): Revisit the hook. Define Condensation .
3:11 (Quiz): Pause before each answer to let students vote.
20 min
Condensation Detective
Distribute the Sort Cards and Detective Worksheet . Students must identify if the image represents Evaporation or Condensation.
Evaporation Examples
Drying hair, puddles vanishing, clothes on line.
Condensation Examples
Foggy mirror, dew on grass, breath on cold day.
5 min
Cycle Sketchpad
Students draw the state change cycle from 2:37 in the video. Ensure they use RED arrows for heating (evaporation) and BLUE arrows for cooling (condensation).
Teacher Tip: Address the "Leak"
Students often think the water on the soda can "leaked" through the metal or is "sweat" from the drink. Emphasize that the water was already in the air as invisible gas (water vapor) and turned back to liquid when it touched the cold can.

☀️
The Mystery Can
🥤
Observe the outside of the cold can.
Where did that water come from?
Did the can leak?
Why is it "sweating"?
How Does Matter Change?
Physical Change
Changing the shape or color .
🥬 ✂️ 🧱
Example: Cutting celery or squishing clay.
State Change
Changing from solid, liquid, or gas .
🧊 💧 ☁️
Example: Ice melting or water boiling.

Detective Mission
You are now a Condensation Detective . Your goal is to find clues of matter changing state.
📂
Analyze your Sort Cards
✍️
Record findings in your Worksheet
Is it Evaporation (+ Heat) or Condensation (- Heat)?

Initial Observation: The Cold Can
Evidence Sketch (The Can)
Describe the evidence on the outside of the can:
Where did this moisture come from?
02
Field Evidence: Card Sorting
Examine your image cards. Determine if heat was added (Evaporation) or heat was removed (Condensation).
