Teaching Tips & Discussion Hooks
Common Misconception
1st graders often think "Alive = Moves on its own." Since plants don't walk, they assume they are like rocks or toys.
Video Discussion Anchors
Pause at 0:53 (Sunflowers)
"The video says plants are alive, but they don't walk. How do we know?"
Pause at 1:08 (Clothesline)
"The clothes are moving in the wind. Does moving mean they are alive?"
The Alien Defense Logic
Encourage students to think about what happens if you DON'T take care of a plant vs. a rock.
It drinks water (Needs)
It gets bigger (Growth)
It has babies/seeds (Reproduction)
It dies if it has no light/water (Survival)
Anchor Chart: Life Signs
Is it Alive?
It grows!
It needs water!
It needs light!
It makes seeds!
Teacher Script for Charting
"Wow, group 1 said their cactus grows spikes. Let's add 'GROWTH' to our chart. Who else saw growth? Great! And group 3 said their rose dies without water. So all living things have NEEDS."
Pro Tip:
Use a green marker for plants and a blue one for universal living things characteristics to help visually group the ideas.
