Planet Diaries Teacher Guide Planet Diaries
Teacher Facilitation Guide
4th Grade | Writing & Science
Lesson Objective
Students will write a creative narrative from the perspective of a planet, incorporating specific scientific facts about its composition (rock, metal, ice, or gas) to define its "personality."
Pacing & Flow
05m
Warm-up: Planet Personalities
Use the slides to show planet close-ups. Ask students: "If Mars were a person, would they be angry, energetic, or shy? Why?"
10m
Video Viewing: "Our Solar System"
Watch the video. Use the "Pause & Discuss" prompts provided in the slide deck at specific timestamps.
20m
Writing Activity: Planet Diaries
Students use the Fact Bank to draft their entries. Encourage "scientific puns" based on planetary traits.
10m
Closure: Who Am I?
Students read entries. Class guesses the planet based on the composition clues (rock, metal, gas, ice).
Vocabulary
Terrestrial: Rock and metal (Inner).
Gas Giant: Hydrogen and helium.
Ice Giant: Frozen water and gases.
Gravity: The pull toward the Sun.
Key Questions
"What would happen to the planets if the Sun's gravity disappeared?"
"Why do the inner planets have solid surfaces while the outer ones don't?"
Success Criteria
Category 3 - Stellar 2 - Orbiting 1 - Launching Scientific Accuracy Uses 2+ facts about composition (rock, gas, etc.). Uses 1 fact about composition. Mentions planet name but no facts. Perspective Strong consistent voice; feels like a personified planet. Attempts first-person perspective throughout. Switches between "I" and "It". Creativity Uses unique adjectives or puns based on the video. Basic narrative with clear beginning/end. Brief list of facts in diary format.

Your Diary Mission
1
Pick a planet from the solar system.
2
Write a Diary Entry from its perspective.
3
Include at least 2 facts about what you are made of (rock, metal, hydrogen, helium, frozen water).
4
Keep your name a secret! We'll guess who you are later.
"Dear Diary, I'm feeling heavy today because I'm full of rock and metal..."

1. Scientific Spark
Think about the planet you chose. Which fact about its composition (what it's made of) was the most helpful for creating its personality? Why?
2. Galactic Guessing
When you listened to your classmates read their diaries, what was the best clue you heard that helped you identify a planet?
3. Future Voyage
The video mentioned that gravity holds the solar system together. If you could visit any planet, which one would you choose, and what is one question you would ask it?
