What is Matter?
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space (volume).
If you can weigh it and it fills a room, a bucket, or a microscopic space—it's matter!
Everything from galaxies to germs is made of matter.
The Building Blocks: Atoms
The Atom
The smallest unit of matter that retains its identity. Like a single LEGO brick.
The Element
A substance made of only one type of atom. (e.g., Gold, Oxygen, Iron)

A Compound is a substance formed when two or more different elements are chemically bonded.

Mixtures: Just Hanging Out
Unlike compounds, substances in a mixture are physically combined, not chemically bonded.
They can be separated by physical means (filtering, sorting, boiling).

The "Smooth" mixture. Looks the same throughout.

Part 3: Situation Station
1. Water: Distilled water is a compound (H₂O). Salt water is a mixture because the salt and water are physically mixed and can be separated by evaporation.
2. Sand/Iron: Heterogeneous . Separate using a magnet (iron is magnetic, sand is not).
3. Air: Specific type is a Homogeneous Mixture or Solution (gaseous solution).
Teaching Tips
• Model Comparison: Use the LEGO analogy from the slides. A single brick is an atom; bricks snapped together are compounds; a bucket of loose bricks is a mixture.
• Common Pitfall: Students often think "Solution" only refers to liquids. Remind them that Air (gas) and Steel (solid) are also solutions!
• The "Rule of One": If it has only ONE type of particle (atom or molecule) and ONE chemical name/formula, it's a pure substance.
