Eco Explorers: Facilitating Deep Conversations
Use this guide to facilitate the lesson's discussions. Your goal is to guide students through observing ecosystems, unpacking ecological challenges, and exploring solutions. Encourage open sharing, active listening, and critical thinking.
1 Observing Ecosystems (5 minutes)
Slide 2: Healthy vs. Polluted Ecosystems
Primary Questions:
"What differences do you notice between these two images?"
"How might people’s actions lead to each situation?"
Follow-Up Prompts:
• "Can you think of a time you saw litter or pollution? How did it make you feel?"
• "Why do you think some places become polluted while others stay clean?"
2 Sharing Ecological Challenges (10 minutes)
Resource: Challenge Cards Set
Have groups share:
Issue: What is the main problem on your card?
Impact: How does it affect animals, plants, and people?
Follow-Up Prompts:
• "What surprised you about this issue?"
• "Who is most affected by this challenge?"
3 Brainstorming Solutions (10 minutes)
Resource: Sustainability Solutions Worksheet
Invite one solution per group to share:
Feasibility: Why could this work in your community?
Impact: How big of a difference could it make?
Follow-Up Prompts:
• "What materials or people would you need to make this happen?"
• "How could you involve your family or friends?"
4 Personal Connection (5 minutes)
Ask: "What is one thing YOU can do at home or at school to help?"
Teacher Notes Space:
Follow-Up Prompts:
• "How easy or hard do you think this action will be?"
• "Who else could help you?"
5 Wrap-Up & Pledge (5 minutes)
Slide 8: Closing
Final Questions:
"Share one word to describe how you feel as an Eco Explorer."
"How can we remind each other of our pledges all year?"
Keep the discussion lively by encouraging all voices, validating ideas, and connecting student insights back to real-world actions. Let’s empower our Eco Explorers to make a difference!

Small Group Discussion Set • Instructions: Cut along the dotted lines.
Challenge 01
Deforestation
Large areas of forests are being cut down to make room for farms, cities, and to get wood for paper and furniture. When trees are removed, the animals that live there lose their homes.
Discussion Questions:
"If the trees are gone, where do the birds and bugs go? How does this change the air we breathe?"
Challenge 02
Plastic Pollution
Millions of tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year. Items like straws, bags, and bottles don't break down. Instead, they break into tiny pieces that sea animals might accidentally eat.
Discussion Questions:
"What happens to a sea turtle if it eats a plastic bag? How does plastic affect the beaches we visit?"
Challenge 03
Water Scarcity
While Earth has a lot of water, only a tiny amount is fresh water we can drink. In many places, there isn't enough clean water for everyone to drink, wash, or grow food.
Discussion Questions:
"How would your day change if you only had one bucket of water? Why is it important not to waste water?"
Challenge 04
Endangered Species
Because of habitat loss, hunting, and pollution, many animals are at risk of disappearing forever. When one species goes extinct, it affects the whole food web.
Discussion Questions:
"What happens to a forest if all the bees disappear? How can humans help protect endangered animals?"
