The Early Life of Muhammad
Name: __________________________
Date: ___________________________
Around 570 CE, a man named Muhammad was born in the city of Mecca in Arabia (now called Saudi Arabia). At that time in Mecca, there were many different groups in Arabia fighting for power. Most people were polytheistic, meaning they believed in many different gods.
Muhammad’s early years were hard. His father and mother both died when he was very young, followed a few years later by his grandmother. He was adopted into his uncle’s home, where he worked tending sheep. It is said he was a sweet and gentle child, sensitive to human suffering and always willing to help others. As he witnessed his neighbors behaving poorly, he was shocked by the actions of those around him.
Muhammad grew up and married Khadija. They were happy, and worked together in marriage and in business, as Muhammad became a successful merchant. Over the next fifteen years, Muhammad began to meditate by himself, choosing a mountain near Mecca called Mount Hira.
Mount Hira
"It was on this mountain that Muhammad sought clarity away from the busy and often troubled streets of 6th-century Mecca."
