The Big Stretch

The Great Beginning
For thousands of years, humans looked up at the stars and wondered if the universe had always existed. In the 20th century, scientists made a groundbreaking discovery: the universe had a definitive birthdate. Approximately 13.8 billion years ago , our entire cosmos was compressed into a point of infinite heat and density known as a singularity. This point was unimaginably small—far smaller than an atom. In a fraction of a second, this point began to expand rapidly. This monumental expansion is what we call the Big Bang .
Stretched Out Space
Contrary to popular belief, the Big Bang was not an explosion of matter into pre-existing empty space. Instead, it was the expansion of space itself . As space stretched open in all directions, it carried matter along with it. In its earliest phases, the universe was a blindingly hot, dense soup of energy. As the universe grew, it began to cool down. This cooling allowed energy to condense into particles, which eventually formed hydrogen and helium—the building blocks of stars and galaxies.
Discovering the Clues
How do we know this happened if no one was there to see it? Scientists rely on two primary pillars of evidence. The first was discovered by astronomer Edwin Hubble in 1929. He noticed that the light from distant galaxies was shifted toward the red end of the spectrum, a phenomenon called redshift. This proved that galaxies are moving away from us, meaning the universe is expanding. The second clue is the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) , an invisible static glow discovered in 1964. The CMB is the ancient, cooled-down "echo" of light from the birth of the universe.
The Growing Cosmos
Today, galaxies continue to speed away from each other. Gravity acts as a cosmic glue, holding stars together inside galaxies, but the vast spaces between galaxies are continually stretching. The universe is not just expanding; astronomers recently discovered that this expansion is actually accelerating, moving faster and faster into the deep future.
