Solar System 101
Lesson Objective
Students will understand the concept of "orbit" and the structure of the solar system by creating physical and artistic models of planetary movement.
Key Vocabulary
Orbit: The path an object takes as it moves around another object in space.
Gravity: The invisible force that pulls objects toward each other.
Solar System: The Sun and everything that moves around it.
Force: A push or a pull on an object.
Materials List
White Paper Plates (1 per student)
Yellow Markers or Paint
Beads or small craft balls
Liquid Glue or Glue Sticks
Thin Black Markers
Lesson Procedure

Warm-up: Follow the Leader (5 min)
Assign one student to be the Sun . They stand in the center and spin slowly in place. The rest of the students are Planets . Have them walk in circles (orbits) around the Sun. Encourage them to stay in their own "rings" and not crash into each other!

Watch & Discuss: Space Discovery (10 min)
Watch the SciShow Kids video: "Where Did Earth Come From?"
Focus specifically on 2:39-3:25 for planetary formation.
Discussion Question: What shape did the giant cloud of dust turn into? (A frisbee/flat disk)
Discussion Question: How did the planets form within that disk? (Gravity pulled dust into clumps/rings)

Activity: Paper Plate Solar Systems (20 min)
Color the very center of the paper plate yellow to represent the Sun.
Draw 3-4 concentric rings around the Sun using a thin marker. These are the orbits.
Select beads or craft balls to represent planets.
Glue the planets onto the rings. Remind students that each planet "clears its path" along its orbit!

Closure: The Great Pull (10 min)
The Big Question: Why don't the planets just fall into the Sun if gravity is pulling them?
Answer: The planets are moving sideways very fast! Gravity pulls them in, but their sideways speed keeps them moving in a circle. It's a perfect balance. Think of a ball on a string being swung in a circle—the string (gravity) keeps it from flying away, but the speed keeps it from hitting your hand!
